Not what I'm asking. I like both of these trades for Van although I would prefer to give up less more McLeod.

Devils pass. They want to keep McLeod long term.

Would the Canucks be interested in Merkley instead?

I am not sure what McLeod's market would be if Devils shopped him around, but that seems about right.
I'd prefer to keep him though...looked good this year in 4C role.

I don't really have interest in Merkley but McLeod is someone I'd definitely want.

Glad to hear the value is probably close, whether devils are willing to move him is another story for sure.

I said yes for Van so that's unfortunate.

Curious, what does your expansion protection list look like on forward?
Id assume it's:
Hischier, Wood, Bratt, Zacha, Kuokkanen, McLeod, Sharangovich?

Leaving: Merkley, Bastian, Johnsson exposed?

what makes you think the 41st oa and a real potential of a 7th rounder making a NHL impact worth getting a meddling prospect that can crack the Devils

McLeod isn't a prospect. He's a good 3C

Yes - that is my guess as well.
Forwards are pretty straightforward.
Defense is trickier. Severson, Siegenthaler, and one of Butcher, Subban or possible trade acquisition.

How much do you like Bastian and Merkley? I'm just curious that if they got a solid enough return for McLeod and they particularly like Bastian, for instance, but aren't as high on Merkley. Would it make sense to move McLeod and allow them to protect Bastian?

Ya McLeod is a young player that has developed nicely into a defensive 3C and he's a right hand shot. I agree that the 41st and Persson (who could be a steal for a 7th rounder) is a bit nerve racking to give up. But 3C is one of the Canucks biggest holes and McLeod pretty much fits what they need perfectly now and into the future.

Bastian is more replaceable than McLeod
McLeod is also our only Righty Center.

Merkley is moveable...but he is a bit of a tweener.
Not good enough for top-6, not defensive or a grinder for fixed bottom-6 role.
But could become kind of poor man's Blake Coleman.
He punches above his weight physically, and shows some skill.
He just looks like AHL all-star a lot of the time.

Bastian and McLeod have great chemistry together and have been playing together for at least 5+ years. Bastian just resigned too so Devils would want to keep him. I think Devils would want both McLeod and Bastian together

Merkley is an interesting player because some people love him but others don't. Personally, im not a fan of Merkley but some Devils fans like him alot. I rather trade Merkley instead of Bastian or McLeod
