Description
What would Carolina want in exchange for Hamilton's signing rights? Do we have any clue? I used 5th rounder since that is what Hayes and Edmundson got.

And contract look right?

Wait did I miss something? Why does Ristolainen have a Devils logo on him, and how is he on this team without making a trade?

Hamilton's rights for a 5th is fair, but I think Hamilton is going to get an 8 year offer from a team, and that team will pay more to Carolina for a sign and trade. What that price is I have no idea given that sign and trades are extremely rare, but I think someone like Hamilton will get that offer

No one knows what the cost will be, but I do think it will be slightly higher than that. We got a 5th for Edmundson's right last year, so a 4th or 3rd?

Signing rights don't mean much now. Players have one week to negotiate with all teams before they actually be signed.
Not sure of what Hamilton's motivation would be to sign before he explored all his UFA options. Just my opinion, if Hamilton's only motivation is $$$$, some team is going to pay too much. And 9.5m might too much, maybe not this year but later.

That was what I was thinking - a 2022 4th since we have a few of them.

If a deal is in place before the trade is made, it’s a sign and trade, in which case you’d have to pretty much pay full trade price for him. I don’t think there’s ever been an official sign and trade. Even with mark stone to vegas, that deal was negotiated right after the trade was made, the only thing that happened pre-trade was stone informing vegas he’d be open to a deal.

When looking at the Hayes to Philly deal, the trade happened and it took like 2-3 weeks after the trade before a deal was announced.

To just get his rights with no indication of whether he would resign or not, likely costs you a 4th. But if CAR allows the devils to speak with him, and he informs the devils he’d be open to signing a long term deal, then it probably would be shaped around the stone trade. Like a 2nd and bahl type of deal. Maybe more but I’m not sure.

I don’t think there’s ever been an official sign and trade in the last 20 or so years. Maybe a long time ago, but it’s extremely rare. Stone was the closest and it wasn’t even a sign and trade as the deal wasn’t negotiated until after the trade. I’d be shocked to see a true sign and trade deal. Maybe something shaped around the stone deal, where hamilton says he’s open to resigning there, and then a deal is made after the trade.

if its a sign and trade its gonna cost NJ some good picks and prospects

if its his signing rights a mid pick or B prospect should get it

if its through FA nothing (just 8.5-10mill in cap space)

Especially since the Canes have already given him permission to speak to teams about a contract. So unless the sign-and-trade for an 8 year deal (which has never happened before) is happening, it would be useless to trade for Hamilton’s rights.

So it looks like there have been some Risto to NJ rumours, so I guess that a person working on CapFriendly accidentally jumped the gun and put him on New Jersey, and fixed their mistake quickly.

His rights alone would probably be worth slightly higher than a 5th because he’s an elite to pair D, not a 2C/2LD, however those aren’t great comparable because the situation is different. In those cases, the rights were dealt for a pick, and then negotiations started (basically a pick for a week of exclusive negotiation rights). In this situation, Hamilton gets to negotiate beforehand so there’s no risk, if you’re trading for him you know you’ve got a deal, and you also get the 8th year if it’s a sign and trade, both of which have significantly more value and will raise the cost. I offered a B prospect plus a 2nd in an ACGM yesterday, I think that would probably be fair, I don’t see him bringing in a top tier prospect or pick. One podcast I listened to suggested that PK Subban half retained would be a good return, as Carolina is more concerned with the present so an NHL body is preferred.

Well there’s no sources whatsoever reporting a trade is done, so it’s definitely a mistake.

A 5th for Johnsson is a terrible trade. A first for Dunn might be an overpayment but it's not terrible especially with the Isles 1st. I'd definitely consider it.
