His rights alone would probably be worth slightly higher than a 5th because he’s an elite to pair D, not a 2C/2LD, however those aren’t great comparable because the situation is different. In those cases, the rights were dealt for a pick, and then negotiations started (basically a pick for a week of exclusive negotiation rights). In this situation, Hamilton gets to negotiate beforehand so there’s no risk, if you’re trading for him you know you’ve got a deal, and you also get the 8th year if it’s a sign and trade, both of which have significantly more value and will raise the cost. I offered a B prospect plus a 2nd in an ACGM yesterday, I think that would probably be fair, I don’t see him bringing in a top tier prospect or pick. One podcast I listened to suggested that PK Subban half retained would be a good return, as Carolina is more concerned with the present so an NHL body is preferred.
