Should Seattle select spezza

Description
Lots of talk that the leafs will go 4-4-1 for ED and Kerfoot will be best player available. Now that soezza is signed for next year, wouldn’t he be the best option? League minimum contract for a guy who can put up 30 points, better underlying numbers than Kerfoot, leaves plenty of cap space open to take on bad contracts, and can be flipped at the deadline for a decent return.

Honestly I’m surprised the leafs signed him already because it really complicates things

Not really. He will tell them that he will retire. So not only would they be wasting a pick, but they would also get a bad rep as far as veterans go. Not the best thing for an expansion team that is going to have the "misfits" from other teams.

Don't think SEA will waste their selection on Spezza. I've heard talks that he'd just retire if he was claimed off waivers, not sure if that was confirmed or not.

Spezza would retire, and Kerfoot is better than nothing.

In what world is Josh Anderson available to SEA lol
Also they won't take 38 yr old Spezza even if he had a good year

I needed to have 10 roster players to make the team so I just did a meme and acquire every single player named Anderson. Point of the post is about spezza.

Spezza is a valuable asset and many teams would want him, especially at that cap hit. It would benefit Seattle to have him has a trade chip especially over Kerfoot who is a 3C with, at best, a fair cap hit.

If, as many have pointed out, spezza were to simply retire if selected, then I get why Seattle wouldn’t risk it. Otherwise, he is the BPA for seattle

Everyone said the same thing about Jeff Carter if he were traded out of LA, and that turned out to be BS.

but carters agent never backed up his claim, Carter would often just mention it

remember when Spezza got waived for cap reasons

his agent came out and said if hes claimed he would retire

and for 2 seasons Spezza's message was clear he wants to be a leaf.

Carter never mentioned it, ever. It was brought up by Bob McKenzie on TSN as a hypothetical and everyone ran with it. Carter actually shot it down on multiple occasions.

But that's besides the point. Until it actually happens, I'm not convinced that anyone would retire if they were under contract and felt like they had a shot to compete for a Cup on their new team. Based on how well Vegas did in year 1, that's not an unrealistic expectation for Seattle.

He's still a big body to have out there, Hockey isn't just about goals, But yes he has not been playing great recently

you can get a big body that doesn't produce anything for league min. At worst under 2M on a low-term deal. He's actually been horrible outside of the first 10ish games of the season. For all the great things Bergevin did this year, trading Domi and locking him up for that much money was awful (yes they needed to trade Domi but yikes on Anderson)
