If Hyman was willing to sign that deal he'd be staying a Leaf. I bet he wants a number north of 6 (or at least close to it).

If Hyman gets north of 6, he will be one of the most overpaid players in the league. And why would he want to stay in TOR? They’re not winning anything, let’s be honest. I’m willing to bet the Devils win a cup again before the Leafs

I didn't say he's getting it, but that he's going to want to cash in (probably his only time to be a UFA).

Normally, I would disagree but since the Leafs are absolutely cursed and cheering for them sucks, they're never going to win a cup, so maybe the Devils will get lucky and win one. I don't think there's an argument that the Devils are significantly further away then Toronto is currently, and over the next 5 years the Leafs likely have better chances to win then New Jersey does.

Agreed 100% that Hyman will be one of the most overpaid players in the league. Big time buyer beware with him, but someone is going to overpay (Pray that it's not your team...)

As for your second point, that's a pretty bold take given that in the past 9 years, the Devs have made exactly one playoff appearance (getting thumped 4-1 by the Bolts).

Do I think NJ is on the upswing? Sure. But they're not a "Hyman" away from being that team.

Oh for sure I know that. But TOR lacks the players to win in the playoffs. Too much star power. Tom Wilson would be great fit for TOR

IMO part of the problem with the Leafs is that most of their money is tied up in 3 players and guys with NMC in their contracts. They have all this talent in the minors and end up trading it away.

I think this whole "Lacks the players to win in the playoffs" is such an overplayed narrative. How many times did Washington flame out in the playoffs for the exact same reasons listed above? Toronto lost this year because Carey Price played out of his mind. The Leafs outplayed the Habs from start to finish.

Like, people say that the Hyman-type players are the gritty guys that will help win you a series...well, he had 1 point in 7 games. Wilson? 2 pts in 5 games for the Caps. in yet another 1st round exit for them. Heck, half of this site was spouting off about how Nylander is soft, lazy, etc...after that series? Not so much.

The Leafs need to continue building on what they've got. The playoffs are an absolute crap shoot, and saying "tHeY dOn'T hAvE tHe RiGhT pLaYeRs!!!" is the biggest media-driven narrative foolishness that people (for some reason) seem to eat right up.

Curious as to who this "Talent in the minors" is that they've traded away?

Aside from shedding a 1st to get rid of Marleau (Turned out to be Seth Jarvis...without Covid it ends up being 20+ OA instead of 13th), and the 1st that landed Muzzin (Turned into Bjornfoot...don't know how you argue against acquiring Muzzin), I don't remember them trading away any sort of overwhelming minor league talent?

100% ...

Though those contracts are tough to maneuver around. They will get it right one year, I suspect..

All in all, who wouldn't want to start a team with the Leaf's top 4 - 5 players? Its a solid core, just a tad too expensive. If Cap goes up someday, it will offer relief. Your reference to Washington is spot on.
