Weaponizing cap

Created by: ItzLamey
Team: 2021-22 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Explanation for some trades.
First trade is a pure cap dump and to get Johnson to waive by telling him beforehand he would be sent to Edmonton (a contender)
Neal is a capdump and the lack of retaining salary on Neal plus the term gives Edmonton a player in return.

Virtanen seems to have hit a wall I'm Vancouver and Loui is a cap dump to help clear for Hughes and Patterson, plus the rumors of Van being interested in SR would also be beneficial to clear Virtanens cap aswell.

Most of the players that are ufas for Detroit this off season I wouldn't be shocked didn't return but glendenning is a killer on face-off's so I wouldn't be shocked if he did come back.

Now my favorite part, let's here the criticisms fellow armchair Gms.. 😂

Something to consider for Vancouver - Maybe 2022 second is better.
      Or not.
Eriksson can be buried in the minors and Virtanens buyout is so cheap, might not worth a 2nd

I doubt oilers use Puljujärvi to dump Neal. Him and McDavid had amazing Chemistry IMO this past season

Detroit would get Alnefelt, Puljujärvi, a late 1st and a very late 3rd to eat $19 million in cap and $18 million in real salary.

I wouldn't do that deal unless I was offered the double in return.

That cap can be used much better.

It was fine until you included Puljujarvi. And VAN doesn't need to shed Eriksson this way.

I like the trades but think Tampa would have to give more to make it happen. Also the cap hits for vrana and hronek seem a little low.

To take on Johnson's three years I would definitely expect a bit more. I don't think puljujarvi fits in Detroit and has way more value to Edmonton. In my opinion the first is probably a decent enough return, if you give Johnson some value at half salary maybe a third comes back as well. Eriksson trade is fine, I do think Vancouver needs to shed salary if they don't want to just throw this season. Virtanen brings negative value and should just be bought out, it's quite cheap for him. Djoos is playing on Europe next year.

The OIlers have very little interest in moving on from JP unless return is significant. Oilers are thin on the wings and he's a young cheap top 6 winger. I think a 1st with Neal is as high as the Oilers go for a dump, more than that and they just buy him out. I think I'd have time for TJ at 50% retained but wouldn't be giving up a JP to make it happen.

Yzerman has already proven to be a stickler for spending money I think Bertuzzi's will be near spot on, Viana could command a tad more but I doubt it in only a 11 game sample

Vancouver also is shedding virtannen as he has regressed this year and total would clear 7+mill all for a second round pick.

Possibly but I think the Marc stall trade for cap really set the rates and I think this is probably close to what could actually happen we fans value players and draft picks differently than the gms so I really don't know...

Johnson would essentially be replacing Puljujärvi and with both Puljujärvi's salary and Neal's gone it would free up a bunch of cap in Edmonton. Player for player +draft pick for dump.

Would equally take another draft pick or 2 if they just wanted the Neal dump +Johnson. I am more looking at cap numbers for Edmonton being the deciding factor more than locker room chemistry and lines

It's been made explicitly clear over the past few years that teams are not going to be giving up valuable picks or players for cap dumps.
