Description
This is a general response to a lot of the Isles offseason projections that have them bringing in people like Chara and bringing back people like Andy Greene and Zajac. While I don't dislike the fit of any of these players necessarily, I think there are a few kids in the Isles prospect pool that should be getting a look before these guys do. The team needs to get younger on the whole anyway, so this is a chance to do that. First of all, it's time for the Golyshev/Bellows experiment to begin, I think both of them are going to fight hard for a roster spot, and I think one of them makes it. Golyshev was a .5 point per game player on a very meh Avtomobilist team, and I think he can put up similar production in the NHL if deployed correctly, which I trust Trotz can do. Bellows really started to heat up in the NHL before he got sat for good and would definitely like to see more of him. It is also time for the Salo/Bolduc experiment to begin. Salo was a above .5 point per game D-man in the Swedish league, he's absolutely NHL ready in my book (kid is insane watch his game tape). Bolduc is a little raw (he is still only 20 lol) but I think should maybe get a chance this year. His AHL stint has gotten pretty well, so even if its in a limited role, I'd like to see him get a chance. I also think you sign a Veteran here to insulate them, but definitely not a immobile dinosaur like Chara/Greene. (If Mark Pysyk will sign for league min, I think thats a sneaky way to do this) Otherwise most of the team stays the same. In other news, I hate to admit it but that is probably the at BEST deal you get for Ladd. Seattle also takes Mayfield, his contract is honestly too good for them to not, and I don't think they're going to on purpose swallow a Leddy or Bailey deal just because they occasionally decide to produce. Also sorry Uncle Leo ;-;

As an Islanders fan I love this idea. I don't mean to get cocky, but it seems like as long as the Islanders make the playoffs, it doesn't matter what seed because they're good against everyone, so they can afford to skid a bit if they put the kids in for 10 games and see how it goes.

I think Cizikas will go for 2 mil not three which will give us room to have Johnston in instead of Golyshev. but maybe we want Golyshev in. idk

Cizikas will get at least 3 on the open market. He doesn't have to take the huge pay cut that Martin took because Zeeker is actually a hugely valuable player to his or frankly any team. A hometown discount is possible, but I doubt it dips anything below 2.5. The best 4th line in hockey is in reality the best 4th line center in hockey and two dudes that can hit you. Also yes you def want Golyshev over Johnston, you don't need, or want 2 Matt Martins in the line up.

Letting children play is not Lou's MO. He has always worked a few kids into the line up, but he always goes out and gets more gray beards than the fans think is necessary. Lou isn't going to change.

I'll be honest, I kinda like this more, but I do not foresee the Devils taking Ladd for what is essentially 2 + Mayfield. And if this happens, this also means that Seattle likely needs to take Leddy or Bailey/Ebs (whoever the islanders don't protect), so that frees up even more cap, so... yay? (Reinhart would be fun, but I do not foresee that happening)

It’s a bit different now - isles have multiple prospects who will need waivers, they can’t afford to sign multiple 35+ vets.

I would probably trade Leddy and keep mayfield. Sign Jake McCabe or kulikov

You are certainly right, but don't underestimate Lou being Lou.

He could easily trade some of those assets for a high level veteran to push for the cup. That would not surprise me one bit. Good Luck. Hope he does whatever you prefer, but one thing is for sure, Lou will do Lou.

They don’t have the cap space to trade for anyone lol - if anything he’ll have to trade vets this offseason. I dont think Lou has been in this position before.

He must be dying.

He loves trading kids for vets. Look at his history. Some worked out well, some not, but he always tried. After the cups, he ran NJ to the ground chasing. Not the rebuilding type old Lou

He hasn’t traded kids for vets in the last 5+ years, he just trades draft picks for vets he thinks are going to help the team win (palmieri, Boyle, plekanek, pageau)

Yeah I wouldn’t trust Lou to rebuild a team at this point, but the difference between NJ and the isles is that all of the best players on the isles are under the age of 27. Barzal (24) , Beauvillier (24) , Wahlstrom (21) , pelech (26) , sorokin (25) .

This offseason Beauvillier and pelech both need new contracts and they are both extremely important to what the isles do. They’ll both command at least 5 mill each - the last two off seasons he’s had to give out a lot money to young players which is good because he doesn’t have the resources to overpay UFAs. It’s pretty much forcing him to have to play younger players.
