Why would they avoid trading him in division? He’s not good enough to be scary on his own and the Sabres are not going to be competitive for 5 years anyway. This whole concept is stupid and outdated. You trade him for the best return, end of story.

Not enough? That’s a top 10 pick. Reinhart’s value is a 1st+2nd from a competitive team, a late 1st+the earliest 2nd wouldn’t move you up to the top 10 so how does that make it worth less when traded directly for Reinhart. Ottawa shouldn’t be trading that pick anyway.

As for the contract, tf you mean cheap? His comparable is William Karlsson, who signed 8x5.9. This is probably the highest he would possibly get, and it’s probably already an overpay. He’s a 60 point guy, not an all star.
