Gaining a high pick is cool and all but that pick would have to clear top 6 early on to be worth the difference in Hamilton and Karlsson over 6 years at about the same price

It's about getting Karlsson for the same AAV as Hamilton would take, PLUS the #7 pick, for #26 and Gardiner. If Dougie truly is asking for too much, this is a way to use that cap space to actually generate an asset.

WPG and SJS won't be trading their 1sts for those trades

You're not trading out of the 1st entirely, though. This is a pick-swap in a questionable draft, where the value between a high 1st and a late 1st isn't all that big because of COVID and how it has impacted scouting.

The value between 7th overall and 26th is absolutely huge, no matter the draft, and especially this draft where after the top 12 or so, the quality drops of considerably.

Gardiner is a cap dump. SJS have to give up an asset and retain and still have to take back a cap dump who can't play defense. I think I'm missing why SJS do this.

I look at it as the opposite. There's a huge disagreement between certain scouts about who the best players are in this draft, and you therefore are going to see a lot of players that (IMO) are some of the best players in the draft, like Raty, Robertsson, and Lysell, that potentially may fall into the 20s. This may be the best time in a long time to have a late 1st round pick.

One cap dump is 6 years, the other one is 2. The gap in magnitude of the two dumps is huge in terms of AAV, as well.

      Jets won’t trade a 1st unless it’s a sign and trade.

      This would be a sign-and-trade.

Ok then yes I’d do it. But if it’s just for his rights then no

Would rather just buy Gardiner out or stash him on LTIR if he’s getting another back surgery which sounds like it could be happening. Don’t want to be stuck with an aging Karlsson for 6 more years.

If Hamilton wants to sign in Winnipeg I'd rather the Jets just go for 7 years and keep the first. In Dougie's case a 5-7 year contract is probably best.

The risk is that Hamilton would choose somewhere else, of course. First-dibs and an extra year is a valuable thing, especially with an elite piece like Dougie.

If he really wants to sign in Winnipeg he will, if he doesn't he doesn't. It's certainly not worth wasting a first to try and convince him.
