He is from BC, and jimbo has supposedly liked Sam for a while. In a weak draft, it may prove to be beneficial for the Canucks to trade their pick in order to get another top six forward. Obviously a trade would have consequences, but Benning is also trying to save his job as well.

Tryamkin's contract takes him to UFA status. Not an asset with value any longer.

I keep seeing the Staal trade referenced for cap dumps but what's always left out is that part of the reason that Detroit was only given a 2nd is because Staal filled a role for them this year and played just under 19mins/night. The last cap dump Ottawa took on was 3.35m between Paquette and Coburn from Tampa last offseason and they were given a 2nd. Paquette and Coburn played a small role and were both shipped back out so if Eriksson is just gong to be bought out at 3m for the one year then a 2nd is fair. 350k less salary but also less impact as he's never seeing the ice.

He's actually being bought at at half the salary retaining so $3M. Once that is bought out the cap hit is $2M year 1, and 500k year 2. So its actually $1.35M less than the Coburn/Paquette deal. That said a 2nd i don't think is too much to ask for. But i think a 3rd and an additional pick could be enough to do it. Maybe change the 7th to one of the additional 5th or 6ths Vancouver has this year.

Honestly I think Ottawa would just eat the money for the one year instead of buying him out. But I’d think a 3rd and a 5th is worth about the same as a 2nd so the value would probably be in line!

Haven’t seen the idea of Eriksson being dumped at 50% before but I think it’s help Vancouver for sure
