Copp and Dunn

Created by: brad_habs

Initial Creation Date: Jun. 18, 2021
Published: Jun. 18, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sucks to not be able to bring Armia back after how good he's been this year, especially in the playoffs, but cap space will be a huge issue for the 22-23 season with Suzuki likely to get a hefty raise. They'll have to move Byron's contract out (easier/cheaper to do on his last year) and might even have to move Edmonson to make space.

Definitely raises the question of if they can really afford to bring Danault back or if they need to hope that Evans can fill the shutdown role.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Copp, Andrew [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Assuming they don't need to use Copp in a package to get a #1 RHD, this gives them a nice upgrade for the second pair, allows them to protect Appleton and move a player that they're reportedly having trouble signing.

In the unlikely event that Seattle takes Chiarot instead of Stanley, that's still a win for the Jets.
WPG
  1. Chiarot, Ben
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (WSH)
2.

STL
  1. Brook, Josh
  2. Lehkonen, Artturi
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
Hate to give up the only good RHD prospect in the Habs system, but St. Louis likely rejects any LD prospects and I feel like getting a PMD that can QB the PP is worth it.

Genuine question here as I’m not as familiar with the Canadiens - is Gallagher worth his contract?

Absolutely he is, since 17-18 he ranks 5th in 5 vs 5 goals, has been on pace or hit the 30 goal mark in 4 of his last 5 seasons, and is the true catalyst of the Montreal offense. He is our future captain and the heart and soul of the team.

Good to know. Thoughts on Weber and Petry deals?

Weber will retire soon, Petry is worth every penny because he’s an excellent skater, he won’t fall of a cliff

Here is the link to the signing analysis

    https://thehockeywriters.com/canadiens-gallagher-extension-good-value/

As you will see only McDavid, Kutcherov, Matthews and Ovechkin out paced him over the 3 years prior to his signing.

No from Winnipeg. The Jets need top 4D if they move Copp.

Weber's deal sucks for Nashville and hurts our cap while he is active but if/when he retires it will be negligible for Montreal. Petry's deal is great value as GMs has already outlined.

I think so. It strikes me as the perfect number for him. He really is a huge part of their team.

I did preface this deal by saying that it assumed they got their #1 RD another way, such as signing Dougie Hamilton. I think Chiarot as done a pretty good job in the Habs top-4 and would be a solid partner for DeMelo on the 2nd pair. The deal could probably be changed to Copp for Edmonson, without draft pick and still be fair, if term would be more appealing.

I know you prefaced that, but I would want the Jets to target a better defenseman if they move Copp. Even if they need to add.
