Someday Never Comes by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 19, 2021
Published: Jun. 19, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description

First thing I remember
Was asking Aqua “Why?”
For there were many things I didn’t know
And Franky always smiled
Tweeted with his right hand
Saying, “Wow! Soon we’ll contend!”

Well, I’m here to tell you now, each and every Canucks fan
You better learn it fast, you better learn it young
Contending never comes

This roster is another exploration on the Canucks off-season. Focusing on trade concepts where they try and leverage other team's expansion draft situation. For the Canucks, their focus on these deals is (1) to re-tool their bottom six, (2) re-tool their defense, (3) create salary cap flexibility going into 2022-23.

I also make the assumption that the Canucks avoid spending money in unrestricted free agency as any contract they sign there is likely to be more inefficient than any contract they acquire in the described trades (even the Johnson trade!)

Don't like a trade? Tell us why! I totally appreciate that I do not understand the nuance of each team and their situation. You can help educate the rest of us.

Trades
1.
VAN
  1. Pitlick, Tyler
Additional Details:
Canucks acquire bottom-six depth—they still pay the same cap hit as Beagle, and pay more actual salary, but get the better player.
ARI
  1. Beagle, Jay ($1,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Same cap hit for Arizona, but they save $1,000,000 in salary (Pitlick is due $2.2m in cash this season, Beagle is only owed $1.2m in cash after his July 1st bonus).
2.
VAN
  1. Subban, Malcolm
  2. Zadorov, Nikita [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
The Canucks leverage their bonus protection spot on defense to take a flyer on Zadorov, who they think can provide size on their blueline and provides a veteran Russian NHL player to help Podkolzin acclimatize. Subban or Delia included to give the Canucks a cheaper backup option for Demko.
CHI
  1. Holtby, Braden ($1,800,000 retained)
  2. Juolevi, Olli
Additional Details:
Chicago deals Zadorov instead of exposing him in expansion. This opens up a roster spot for their youth, and they get an additional prospect in Juolevi who may or may not develop into an NHL player yet. Holtby is a veteran back-up for Lankinen.
3.
VAN
  1. Grant, Derek
  2. Manson, Josh
Additional Details:
Vancouver prefers the RH shutdown oriented Manson over the LH two-way oriented Schmidt as he is a better match to play with Quinn Hughes. The single-year allows the Canucks better cap-flexibility in 2021-22 and they will have cap-space to re-sign him if there is synergy at the end of the season.

Derek Grant is a more expensive 4th line player than MacEwen, but the Canucks need to add size down the middle and Grant has been a 4th line contributor in the past.

The Canucks add the 2nd round pick as there is an element of cap-dumping Schmidt's term.
ANA
  1. MacEwen, Zack
  2. Schmidt, Nate
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Anaheim receives the best defenseman in the trade: effectively trading the one-year of Manson for four-years of Nate Schmidt at a cost controlled amount.

MacEwen seems like the type of power forward that Anaheim likes to take a chance on (see Nick Ritchie, Danton Heinen, etc). He is a younger player more closely aligned with Anaheim's new age group and allows Anaheim to escape Grant's 4th line cap hit.

Anaheim may also be willing to bet the Seattle won't be interested in Schmidt's term as an expansion target—which would allow the Ducks to pivot to a 7-3-1 protection which allows them to protect all of their younger assets like Fleury, Volkov and Steel.
4.
VAN
  1. Johnson, Tyler
  2. 2023 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Veteran middle-six forward that will provide two-way play, can flex between center and wing to give the coach mix and match options, and who has significant Stanley Cup playoff experience. He is overpriced and overtermed for his role, but the Canucks place a bet that he will be a bigger contributor in a team with less depth.
The Canucks acquire a late 1st round pick as part of the deal as they are helping out Tampa's cap three-ways:

(1) They are taking Johnson's $5.0m x 3y off the books.

(2) they are giving Tampa a great bottom-six contributor with PK and depth scoring ability in Tyler Motte at only a 0.6m x 1y cap hit. An asset like this will contribute to their depth the same way that the Goodrow and Coleman contracts did.
(3) Micheal Ferland is on LTIR until his contract is up, Tampa can use his LTIR space for salary cap purposes in the 21-22 off-season and regular season the same way that they used the Gaborik and Nillson contracts last year.
TBL
  1. Ferland, Micheal
  2. Motte, Tyler ($611,250 retained)
  3. 2023 4th round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Tyler Motte is a great bottom-six contributor with PK and depth scoring ability. At only a 0.6m x 1y cap hit he will be an asset that will contribute to Tampa's depth the same way that the Goodrow and Coleman contracts did. They will need cheap depth like this to replace Johnson, and whichever other forwards they lose to UFA or expansion this off-season.

Micheal Ferland is on LTIR until his contract is up, Tampa can use his LTIR space for salary cap purposes in the 21-22 off-season and regular season the same way that they used the Gaborik and Nillson contracts last year.
5.
VAN
  1. Appleton, Mason
Additional Details:
Using the late 1st round pick acquired from the Johnson trade—the Canucks target Mason Appleton from Winnipeg who is bound to be exposed to Seattle in the expansion draft. The Canucks value his cheap contract in 21-22 and see his fit as a middle-six player.
WPG
  1. Roussel, Antoine
  2. 2023 1st round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
Winnipeg uses the additional draft pick they acquire to either improve at the trade deadline, or it allows them more maneuverability at the expansion draft in case they want to use capital to protect Stanley from Seattle.

Vancouver's condition on offering a 1st round pick is that Winnipeg also takes on the full 3.0m x 1y of Antoine Roussel's contract—which Winnipeg can afford to do, and who seems like the type of shit-disturber player that Maurice would like to play in his bottom-six.

There were 2 reasons Gaborik and Nilsson were part of the Coburn trade 1it saved Melnyk 3.2mil hard cash in uninsured portion.2 Ottawa needed the contract spots the cap relief was the same with or without them

Thanks for the feedback. I would consider this trade the same situation then. The Canucks ownership are not likely going to acquire Johnson's $5.5mm in salary in 2021-22 without Tampa taking Ferland's uninsured $3.5mm (that they won't have to put towards the cap).

Besides Ferland—what do you think of the rest of the trade?

I don't think the Hawks entertain this for a rental in Holtby, not to mention the Hawks have backup goalies so not a problem. Zadarov is worth a 2nd or 3rd and just don't see the return value that equates that.

I could see Stan making that Hawks deal, the Canucks may need to add a 3rd or 4th round pick. The Subban for Holtby deal works, both are UFAs and the Hawks get a veteran goalie to take pressure off Lankinen (who is still the future #1). Zadorov for Juolevi (plus a 3rd or 4th) is the kind of reclamation project Stan would take on. I think it would be worth the risk. Good suggestion.

Personally I think it's a little heavy but they do it.

Good idea and works for both parties, the value is close probably slightly VAN favoured but this is a good concept and I'm sure a deal could probably be worked from the origins here.

Some very creative trade ideas here. Was interesting to read - thanks.

Not trying to be negative but I personally don't think the final lineup is very good. You are over the cap limit for a start (there are >$600k of bonus overages due in 2021-22 for VAN). The goaltending is very weak with Subban as a backup. Edler needs to retire. VAN should stay well clear of adding Johnson's contract as it will impede them right when they expect to contend. Please don't trade Motte. Derek Grant and Josh Manson are both described as "struggling" in their positions according to Dobber Frozen Tools. It's certainly not what you want from your 1RD.

I like Appleton and Pitlick as targets.

The big question for most trades involving the Jets is whether the player has Winnipeg on their no-trade list. In this case, Roussel has a 8 team no trade list.

Thanks for the feedback.

Targeting a struggling player is actually the point. You are looking for players who have potential to turn it around, who you can acquire for less than a player at the top of the game. Unfortunately for the Canucks, they are already short on trade assets and cap space—so they will need to make some smart bets like this.

As for goaltending—Demko is going to be the clear #1 next year. Holtby already provided replacement level goaltending at $4.3m. Subban can provide at the very least that same level of goaltending at a much lower cap hit. That allows you to spend that money in other areas.

I think the Canucks would compel him to waive whether its Winnipeg or any other team—it's likely the AHL team in Abbotsford or a buyout if he doesn't accept a trade.

It would probably be somewhere else. Winnipeg is always at the top or near the top of no trade lists. Even Edmonton with McDavid and Draisaitl is still a frequent occurrence on the no trade list surveys done by Custance (Athletic)

The upside of the AHL would be no escrow, so Roussel has a better take home package. 😉
