Devils fans how was Johnsson this season

Created by: Oilyboy

Description
NJ trade - Oil save a mil this year, but Devils get out of Johnsson's extra year. Koskinen should do fine as a 30 games backup for Blackwood. Johnsson could help boost depth scoring if he rebounds just a little. Seems like Johnsson had quite a down year, but maybe this is a good change for both teams and players?

Also, with Tatar's off season and being scratched, I feel he's very due for a 1 year show me deal. Same cap hit as Barrie's was. I'd love to take the chance. Allows more cap freedom the next season to get Nurse resigned.

He wasn't good but Covid definetly affected him alot. They might use him as Kraken bait or give him another shot

Fair. Do you think this proposal would make sense? Behind Blackwood does the team need a solid backup for a season? Not sure what the backup situation is there. Koski flounders when forced to take the starters reins, but when he plays second fiddle he is consistently a decent goalie. Just not a clutch guy...but if the Devils don't have big playoff plans, then that's not a huge issue next season.

If the Kraken take him then I guess that is the best solution for the Devils.

Rumors of Johnsson's demise are greatly exaggerated. He was completely snakebit, counting totals will tell you that. Dig a little deeper you'll find a guy who played his heart out getting Covid probably exacerbated by his asthma. I believe he only got outscored by one goal on one of the lesser teams in the league. His underlying numbers suggest that he elevated his linemates and drove play whenever he was on the ice. Praying to God that AJ gets protected over McLeod so that we may enjoy that sweet sweet regression to the mean in terms of scoring over the course of next season.

As for the trade, there are no cap implications for Devils to consider for the length of his contract and in my opinion Fitzy would be better served looking to receive payment in picks or prospects for taking on Koskinen and other cap from the Oilers, this point being augmented by the fact that there plenty of solid goalies (as in better than Koskinen) hitting FA this summer.

With that said, AJ does divide opinion among us Devils fans so you should definitely seek out more perspectives than what I'm offering here.

So-so.
Had some moments...but doesn't look to be part of long-term plans.
Take him if you want him, but we'd probably try to find a backup goalie in free agent pool.

I think that is all fair.
But no way I'd protect Johnsson over McLeod.
Wingers grow on trees. Right-handed, two-way centers do not.

It was a bit of a rough season for him but with Covid issues and not having a full training camp on a new and young team put him into a losing position.

I wouldn’t lose sleep if he was taken by Seattle but I probably wouldn’t actively trade him for a backup goalie with who will be available in FA. They are probably losing forward in the expansion draft so they might as well hold onto him to fill that hole if he isn’t picked.

The trade is a good idea in theory to get him a change of scenery but I think he will benefit from a full training camp and more stabilized role within the organization. This season seems more like the exception than the rule with him.

@tgasp67 explained it perfectly

I don't think the Devils are dying to move him, but if a good deal comes, then we should do it. If nothing comes, we'll use him as Kraken bait

Not a devils fan. I’m an oilers fan who knows Koskinin has negative value - no wants wants him. He gets bought out or buried in the minors.
