I would have preferred to do like Virtanen (who should not be touched right now) or Juolevi, players that are risks, in return for Patrick, rather than lose a 2nd. Costmar is still pretty much a total wildcard, and despite that fantastic performance at the World Juniors I don't think he holds much trade value. Might as well see if he develops.

Like you said, Virtanen isn't an option right now. Juolevi is a LHD, which the Flyers have plenty of apparently do he likely wouldn't be of interest either. I would have preferred to swap young players, but I don't think there's a fit for that type of deal. It looks like it would have to be similar to the Bennet deal.

Patrick is still young. His injury history is long and concerning, but if he can get back to 75% of his potential after a couple of healthy seasons he could make a great 3C. He's a perfect fit in terms of his role in the organization and maybe coming back to the West Coast will give him the reset he needs. It is still a risk, but he could be a long term solution for 3C.

Yeah, I guess I need a Flyers fan to assess what they want for Patrick. A 2nd is a pretty big risk, but championship teams generally need to make smart gambles to get where they are. I mentioned those guys (JV, OJ) because they seem like they could also use a change of scenery and would have made more sense in a trade IMO. If the fit isn't there for them on the Flyers, then I'm less keen.

I think Bennet was a little more valuable since he had already proven to be useful, in the playoffs especially.

The safer choice at this stage would be to go for a free agent on a flat cap contract, like the type of really cheap deal we managed to get Hamonic on. Someone like Nick Bjugstad, Barclay Goodrow, Thomas Nosek, etc.

Acquiring Patrick would be more intriguing, no doubt.

As a Flyers fan I think a second is a decent return for Patrick right now given his health battles and rumors he wants out of Philly for a fresh start. At this point if he is healthy I personally think he tops out at a decent 3C that can plug in at 2C for limited time that won't get killed. He has always had flashes of brilliance but never was able to get it together in Philly considering the circumstances. So I'd take a second but I think it might be more likely his rights get traded to Seattle as a part of a sweetener for them to take JvR or Jake.
