Quoting: MisstheWhalers
Ehelrs gets everyone he plays with going, was really hoping to see Ehlers/Stastny/Vesalainen tried this season but Maurice just couldn't do it, vets come first ya know.. Lol.. It's crazy to me how he constantly doubles down on the seniority mindset, like are Copp, Perreault and Lowry so fragile they could never occasionally take a backseat to one of the younger guys? Was insane to me that Vesalainen and Harkins never got any 2nd PP time over those three this season.
I would love to see Copp traded, I'm ready to move on, he's alright but with the organization unfortunately committing to Lowry long term there needs to be some change to that bottom six and Copp is the logical one to go imo. Honestly they could put Harkins next to Lowry and it'll be just the same (but probably better) as Copp being there.
I've always liked Perreault and still think he can be effective but think it's time to move on, it's a young man's game and the bottom six needs some bigger and harder to play against guys on it which is why I'd love to see Armia back, he's the best 3rd line winger in the league imo.
Do they really need any additions on the back end?
I mean I know the defence is pretty bad but we gotta think Heinola is a lock to make the team next season, add him to the mix and possibly Samberg too and maybe that's enough to improve the D? I really hope Stanley isn't lost to Seattle, adds a much needed element to this team and it'd be such a waste to see him lost to protect a dime a dozen player like DeMelo who if he wasn't a right hand shot he probably isn't in the league.. Lol
100& agree on the bolded. On defense, I think keeping Heinola up should be a given, but my concern is the lack of size and physicality in this group, and if Stanley regresses (and I'd bet he might) that would only be magnified. Forbort and Poolman are likely gone, and Beaulieu is a 7th defender at best, IMO. Samberg should spend more time with the Moose, imo. If we had 2 rookies and a sophomore manning the back-end, imagine where our turnover numbers and quality chances against would sky rocket to!!! (praise HellebuycK!!)
Now I'm not one of the many who suggests "we should trade for Jones" or "we need to sign Hamilton," but a solid add on defense (RD in particualar) I think would be tremendous. In some of my AGM's (which I think you saw), I throw out the idea of signing Larsson out of Edmonton, or more recently, Hakanpaa out of Carolina. Hakanpaa would be mostly for that "beast" element we lost when Byfuglien walked---he's a 3rd pairing at best---but I think adding Larsson would be huge. Smart, responsible, physical. I think he'd add a great balance to this group.
When all is said & done, the biggest thing I think this team could use is a shake up in their play style, systems & structure. Whether that comes via a new coach or a willingness to change on his part I don't know. But it's not working, and their play against Montreal was some of the most disappointing hockey I've seen from them.
