why would you trade your elite first line right wing sniper for a bunch of late picks and a bust?

The islanders wouldn’t do that trade - they’re not trading wahlstrom.

Wahlstrom has 2 years left on his ELC and will be on Barzal’s wing next season. Boeser is great but he’s going to get paid next season and he’s a few years away from UFA. And a 2022 1st? Makes no sense for the isles

He had a more productive year than most of the players on your team

Why not? Boeser's contract expires next season. We can't afford to have 3 contracts worth 6-9 million. Plus if Podkolzin pans out, that's another 4 -5 mil off the books in 2 years. This way we can sign someone like Reinhart and be able to save money on Wahlstrom by signing him to a bridge deal in 23-24. when his ELC expires.

You do realize how much money comes off the books next year right? You don't trade for a vastly worse player just cause he's on an ELC

Can’t do anything offensively? Or his coach makes him play a low event game. He has one of the best defensive impacts on the isles and he doesn’t need to generate a ton of chances because he’s a great finisher. There’s a reason why he scored at a higher rate than 97% forwards in the league and was 2nd on the isles in goals per 60. He played mostly with replacement level players.

those numbers are skewed. They don't take into account what's coming onto them this year with Petey and Huggy's contract. Petey's contract will be 3 years MAX. He's gonna get at least 10 mil or more after that. Think about it. Boeser's contract expires next season. He gonna get paid too. 7-8 million MIN. That's 21 mil estimated off the books next year for 3 players. We need to sign Rathbone next year and a Goalie. Not to mention having Myers and Schimdt's contracts to handle. it makes sense to try and save some money with a player who has a tremendous ceiling.

Ok u might not like the deal but let's not disrespect Wahlstrom in the process.... He's a very solid young forward who frankly had slightly better advanced metrics than Boeser did

I agree with your point and this is a fair ask for Boeser (even though it doesn’t make sense for the isles) but I would target a Young top 4 RHD instead. That’s a bigger need IMO
