Flames Re-tool

Created by: CWGS
Team: 2021-22 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 16, 2021
Published: Jun. 21, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Explanation on UFAs:

An overpayment on Danault, but it guarantees you get him. He'll be attracted to this bigger role with Calgary, as well as the money, and gives you a pretty good defensive centre who can really play anywhere in your lineup depending on how different players pan out.

Reimer is older, but you get him closer to home and know he's a guy who can sometimes make a big safe. He's older, but 2 million bucks is easy enough to swallow, but he's a definite gamble.

Overall explanation:
I think every single one of these trades addresses a weakness on both teams involved. The retention on salary is tough on Lucic, but if you want an actual semi-return you're going to need to retain at least some money (the Flames could realistically retain more on him, I just tried to even up the DeAngelo salary and then a bit on top of that). This team is a lot deeper than this years but doesn't have as much star power. They're weaker at C and D, but stronger on the wings. Overall, I think this is a really good re-tool that sets Calgary up to compete long term while capitalizing on the assets they have now.

Let me know what you think and what should be adjusted (if anything).

Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Chytil, Filip [RFA Rights]
  2. Deangelo, Anthony
Additional Details:
The Rangers want to get tougher, and they do that with this trade. They get a player who's going to help add that toughness and out from having to add Deangelo's buyout to their myriad of buyouts. They also get a very good 2nd line centre in Monahan who will help them win now, which Dolan seems to want to do.

Giving up Chytil hurts, a lot, but they address two things that are semi issues and they seem to want to give a boost to.
NYR
  1. Lucic, Milan ($1,250,000 retained)
  2. Monahan, Sean
Additional Details:
The Flames get younger to fit Tkachuk's timeline while also freeing up a ton of money. The DeAngelo buyout and retained salary are less than what it would cost them to get out from Lucic and pay out his entire deal, so they save some money on that front.

This is a culture change to a team that needs one and gives them a young second line C (who's not as good as Monahan).
2.
CGY
  1. Gostisbehere, Shayne
  2. Konecny, Travis
  3. Patrick, Nolan [RFA Rights]
  4. 2021 1st round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
I see this trade as being:

Konecny = Gaudreau
Patrick and 1st = Tanev

Philly add a RD which they desperately need and get the hometown kid in Gaudreau who's been heavily linked to a Philly move. They also get out of Gostisbehere's contract and give Patrick a fresh start. With their team right now, they are aiming to compete, so their pick this year really isn't worth a ton to them.
PHI
  1. Gaudreau, Johnny
  2. Tanev, Christopher
Additional Details:
The Flames add a good young player in Konecny on a longer-term deal as well as a former top 2 pick in Nolan Patrick. They can use Gostisbehere as a reclamation project or try to ship him to a team that needs a PP QB.

The Flames shake up their core even more by moving Gaudreau, while also moving on from Tanev's contract after he had a really really good season for them, capitalizing on his value being high when he probably won't be the biggest help for them in a re-tool/re-build.
3.
CGY
  1. Dunn, Vince [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
St Louis actually get something for a guy they would likely lose in the expansion draft and they're two pretty decent assets, it'll also be cheaper than keeping Dunn.
STL
  1. Kylington, Oliver [RFA Rights]
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Flames get an underrated RD who slots right into their second pair.
4.
CGY
SEA
  1. Backlund, Mikael
Additional Details:
I could see Seattle going any direction on this, but I have them taking Backlund because I think they'll struggle to get really good forwards. The Flames shouldn't do any sign and trade to protect assets, because either way, they're getting the cap space which they can use to replace X player. If the Kraken go with one of the defencemen it makes it a lot easier as the Flames don't need to find a new C, so I just went with the hardest situation possible.

With this team, my protection list would look like this:

Forwards: Tkachuk, Mangiapane, Dube, Lindholm, Chytil, Patrick, Konecny

Defenceman: Dunn, Andersson, Hanifan

Goalie: Markstrom

Notable Exposed: Backlund, Giordano, Gostisbehere

ALL MOVES AFTER THIS ARE POST EXPANSION DRAFT
5.
CGY
  1. DeBrusk, Jake
  2. Ritchie, Nick [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Bruins want to dump Debrusk and they do it here. They add a good, but old, defenceman on pretty decent money after retention. Ritchie is a little sweetener who they were probably already going to let walk. The Bruins give it one more kick at the can before Bergeron is too old and Marchand really starts to decline.
BOS
  1. Giordano, Mark ($3,375,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Flames get rid of their captain but try to give him a shot at winning a cup. They add some physicality which Sutter will like in Ritchie as well as DeBrusk who's got some skill but hasn't really panned out yet.

The Blues will get more suitable offers. They certainly don't need an LD back.

That's a bit much. Now we're without a 3rd line winger.

The Flames could easily add a mid-round pick. I just threw in Kylington cause I figured he'd be a good cheap depth option who could slot into the lineup.

It is quite a bit, but the Bruins want to dump DeBrusk and Ritchie is probably not gonna get re-signed. Odds are you'll pick up a new 3LW in free agency for cheaper than you'd get either of them. If you'd rather not do Ritchie it could easily be a 3rd or 4th rounder instead.

Talk about an overpay! Hard pass from Philly! You aren't getting 13OA for a 2nd pairing RHD.

The Bruins are not looking to dump DeBrusk and if Ritchie isn't taken in expansion they'll give him a QO.

The first rounder is in there as a sweetener for taking Gost. It would probably normally be a second if Gost wasn't in the trade, but because they're also dumping his salary it moves up to a first. Tanev also had a really good season, so it's going to cost a bit to get him. Picking up Tanev also solves a pretty decent sized problem in the RD on Philly.

Really? Cause from what I've seen Boston want to move on from him. Especially when they re-sign Hall.

LMFAO, again...we aren't trading 13OA for a 2nd pairing guy even if you think Ghost is a cap dump.

They already have an overload of LDs, young and old. And that 2nd is rather low compared to what others can offer.

They do have a logjam at LW, but after the expansion draft, if one of them gets taken, we'll keep the other one.

There's a difference between wanting to dump a guy and willing to trade a guy. Boston is will to move DeBrusk in the right deal, but they are not looking to dump him when his value is at it's lowest. Hall re-sign also has no impact on keeping DeBrusk.

I suppose. I think Hall signing definitely has an impact because it means DeBrusk'll be stuck on the third line. Again, it could easily just be one of those two and a high-mid round pick. Boston NEED defenceman and Giordano would allow them to really go for it one last time before Bergeron's contract expires. I'd argue this is the right move for them to move him.

I'm not really sure they will though. I highly highly doubt they get a first-rounder, so it'll probably be a 2nd and maybe a little something on top of that, but not much more.

Having a young LW capable of 20+ goals on your 3rd line is a good problem to have, no?

Boston is looking for a 1LD, but not one that's about to turn 38yrs old and has one year left on his contract. They moved on from their long time captain because they wanted to get younger and I can't seem them changing directions just a year later.

Many of the teams who may want Dunn have much higher picks and loads of prospects that suit the Blues needs better.

I think if you change 13OA to top-10 protected 2022 2nd Philly accepts. Konecny has the term, age, toughness, AAV advantage of Gaudreau, but Philly needs more high end talent in the lineup.

Tanev had a stupid good season and has term, if he can repeat this past seasons performance that's well worth it.

Bruh did you even watch Tanev this season... dude easily played at a top pairing level. Whether he contithat level of play through his contract who knows, but he's easily worth a 1st in a shaky draft w/ a cap dump

If it was a back end first then maybe but 13OA is a hard no! He is 31 and chances are he starts to tail off real soon. Not giving up 13 for that.
