For that price, Yes. For the cost suggested by a lot of your fellow Maple Leafs fans (typically Gabe Vilardi AND our 2021 first!), No.

No value in this trade. Vilarid + 1st is too much but this is far too little.

This deal would need to happen after free agency on July 28 so LA can discuss an extension. That means that Rielly would need to survive the expansion draft with Toronto.

Never seen any trade that was Rielly for Vilardi and a 2021. I've seen plently with either, but not both.

Trade comparable is Martinez to Vegas last year. Two 2nd round picks. You can substitute a 2nd for a comparable prospect if you so choose (Thomas, Madden, Clague).

If Toronto wants any more than that, then they can keep him and LA can just negotiate a contract with him as a UFA next summer.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that, because outrage is the best assistant to memory. But it's likely other (minor) parts were included, too.

I guess it wouldn't be that surprising since it's leafs fans we're talking about.

Rielly>>Martinez my friend. They'll send him elsewhere or keep him if that's all they get.

No he's really not. Martinez is playing top pairing minutes on one of the Stanley Cup favorite teams. Martinez even had additional time on his contract at the time of the trade, so Vegas got him for 2 playoffs instead of one.

Martinez has always been known as being a defense-first guy. He really showcased his offensive talents this season with Vegas. This season, Martinez nearly doubled up on Rielly in goals and had comparable point totals. He led the league in blocked shots and was a +26. He plays in all situations, and is a top option on the penalty kill. All while signed for a very team friendly $4M cap hit.

Rielly is an offensively gifted player, but he's not a two-way guy. I wouldn't go so far as to call him a defensive liability, but he's definitely below average at defense. Even playing on the offensively gifted Leafs in the league's weakest division, he only managed 5 goals.

On equal contracts with equal term remaining, I take Martinez over Rielly every day of the week.

Sorry, let me clarify: Martinez when he was traded>Rielly now.

Martinez broke out in Vegas after being traded.

Martinez might be better now, but that's not applicable to this conversation. I was referring to him when he was traded.

Right, the guy that has arguably the two biggest goals in LA Kings franchise history (Game 7 OT vs Chicago & Game 5 Cup Clincher vs Rangers in 2014) just broke out this year with Vegas.

Martinez has proven himself to be a top quality two-way defenseman with Vegas. His value now isn't relevant because he's worth significantly more than Rielly now. When he was considered a defensive stalwart with average offensive capabilities, his value was comparable to Rielly's.

No his value right now isn't relevant to this conversation because Martinez in LA, when he was traded, wasn't very good (still good but not near as good as Rielly). Obviously he was good before then, and would have been more a lot more.

How good he was in 2014 or now is irrelevant to his value when he was traded. We are discussing trade value of Martinez when he was traded vs Rielly's current trade value.

That wasn't my point. My point was he didn't "break out" last year. He has been a quality defenseman for over a decade, and continued to be up until his trade. His play hadn't fallen off or regressed at all. He was still the same guy when he was traded that he was in 2014.

If you want to talk about fall-off, we can talk about Rielly. Despite the best regular season for Toronto in over a decade, Rielly's scoring fell off a cliff. He does one thing really well, and he hasn't done that in over 2 years. If anything, I'd argue that Rielly is worth less than Martinez's was because Marty had two playoffs' worth of value remaining on his deal, while Rielly only has one.

Rielly had 27 points last year in 47 games, which is 0.57 ppg and is on pace for 47 points in 82 games.
Rielly had 35 points this year in 55 games, which is 0.63 ppg and is on pace for 52 points in 82 games.

He's always been that good.

He had 20 goals in 2018-19 and hasn't cracked 5 since. Even pro-rated for 82 games, he only scored 5 and 7 respectively.

Martinez is near the top of the NHL in shot blocks every season, including the Kings' down years. His relative +/- was among the best among his teammates every season. His play did not fall off one bit. His offensive numbers are solid considering he was never known as an offensive contributor.

Rielly had one very good year 2 seasons ago. His current trade value isn't based on that one season.

Tell me why a consistent 50 point guy isn’t worth a first round pick when David Savard and Brady Skjei get first round picks. There is no reason he shouldn’t fetch a first round pick.

As of on the topic of offensive production, Martinez’s in 2019-20 was really, really low, he didn’t even crack 10 points before being traded.

In Savard's case, it's because he's actually very good defensively and plays the highly coveted RHD position. It also can barely be called a 1st round pick since it's from Tampa. Their 1st is closer in value to LA's 2nd than their first. I actually suggested that Rielly is worth two 2nds from LA, which would include the #40 overall from the upcoming draft, so the trade value wouldn't be too far off From Savard's return.

In Skjei's case is because he's a solid two-way guy who was only 25 and had 4+ years remaining on his contract when he was traded. If Rielly was 2 years younger and had 3+ years remaining on his deal, I wouldn't object to giving up a 1st for him either. But he's not and he doesn't, so here we are.

As I said, Martinez was never an offensive guy. The Kints' offense fell off a cliff, so Martinez's offensive numbers took a hit as well. Martinez's value isn't based on his offensive contributions, just like Muzzin's value isn't based on his offensive production. That's why Toronto's ACGMs all are moving out Rielly instead of trading Muzzin to make room for Rielly's extension.

That's fair. I don't think it's a guarantee he gets the 8th overall pick in a trade from LA.

But I find it hard to believe he doesn't get a late first, can't see the leafs wanting a coupe of 2nds that won't be in the nhl for at least 3 years, more likely 5 or so years. They are going to want futures in high picks or prospects, or roster players. 2 2nds aren't going to cut it, as they do absolutely nothing to improve the team now or in the near future.

I'm sure that's true. I don't think Rielly is the type of guy that Blake is looking for anyway. The reported target from earlier this season was a "dynamic LHD 25 or under."
