We are now in year 9 of the Shanaplan, it is 1 week to the 2024 trade deadline and the Leafs have still not won a playoff round.

This will be your team after the trade deadline if the Leafs decide to put all their chips in the middle.

Most statistical models at this point like MoneyPuck, Evolving Wild and the one produced by Micah Blake McCurdy have Toronto as a lock to make the playoffs and destroy my beloved Ottawa Senators in the first round.

All the pundits in Canada's national sports media such as Jeff O'Neill, Craig Button and Nick Kypreos all predict that the Leafs will sweep the Sens.

The Leafs have about an 85% chance of winning the President's Trophy and the Sens have a 50-50 chance of making the playoffs.

It shouldn't even be a contest.

However, a few things just don't feel right.

Matthews and Nylander are both pending UFAs.

They have threatened that if they are still with the Leafs past the deadline and they are still unable to win a playoff round, they will be playing for another team next season.

Nylander has a 10 team no-trade list and will make absolutely no compromise on it.

Matthews has a full blown NMC and will only waive it for the Arizona Coyotes, the Vegas Golden Knights or the New York Islanders.

Not to mention, Muzzin and Brodie also have some amount of trade protection and told the front office they will be playing somewhere else if the Leafs fail to win a playoff round.

    What do you do?

Do you go all in and hope you win a playoff round and maybe the first Stanley Cup since 1967?

    Or ...

Do you sell off the core and get a treasure chest full of picks, prospects and not so flashy roster players?

Let me know your thoughts and I'll see you in the comments :D

    2. 2023 2nd round pick (TOR)
    Additional Details:
A conditional 3rd round pick for 2024 is also included.

If the Leafs win the Stanley Cup in 2024, Washington receives the pick.

If the Leafs fail to win the Stanley Cup in 2024, Toronto keeps the pick.

Some people don't read the description and just skip to the trade.

That's why I have it where it is.

You're making an assumption on an event that would take place almost 3 years from now.

I was going wait a minute hes only been with the leafs for 7 years and started his plan technically in 2015

then I looked through the signings and was like oh thats why its year 9 lul

In general his plan has hit some roadblocks but the idea is there

Lou despite what people say actually did not help us at all

Where was his big Pageau or Palmieri trades

Then you got the Zaitsev and Marleau contracts which cost us Brown and Jarvis

best thing he came up with is trading 2 2nd round picks for 2 rental 3rd line centers who did jack **** in 2017 and 2018

When he could have traded with NYR for JT Miller and McDonagh or Graves, Hall, or someone at least that could have been useful. To think we could have gave Zaitsev for Hall if Lou was smart

Despite the big 4's contracts I trust Dubas to fix this team better than Lou as lets be real Lou would have traded Nylander so he could keep Martin and Komarov

    The good:

The Leafs trade D Dion Phaneuf, F Matt Frattin, F Casey Bailey, F Ryan Rupert, and D Cody Donaghey to the Ottawa Senators for D Jared Cowen, F Colin Greening, F Milan Michalek, F Tobias Lindberg, and a 2017 2nd-round pick.

The Leafs train F Shawn Matthias to the Colorado Avalanche for F Colin Smith and a 2016 4th-round pick.

    The Leafs trade D Roman Polak and F Nick Spaling for F Raffi Torres, a 2017 2nd, and a 2018 2nd.

The Leafs trade G James Reimer and F Jeremy Morin for G Alex Stalock, F Ben Smith, and a conditional 4th-round pick (the condition was that the Sharks make the 2016 Cup Final; they did, so this pick upgraded to a 3rd.)

The Leafs trade F Daniel Winnik and a 2016 5th for Connor Carrick, Brooks Laich, and a 2016 2nd.

The Leafs extend RFA C Nazem Kadri and RFA D Morgan Rielly for six years each. Kadri’s AAV is $4.5M and Rielly’s is $5M.

The Leafs trade a 2016 1st and a 2017 2nd for G Frederik Andersen. In a separate transaction on July 8th, the Leafs send Jonathan Bernier to Anaheim for a conditional pick. The Leafs then sign Andersen for five years at $5M AAV. The conditional on the pick was never triggered and no pick was ever moved.

The Leafs sign unrestricted free agent F Matt Martin for four years at $2.5M AAV.

The Leafs claim G Curtis McElhinney on waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Leafs extend RFA wingers Zach Hyman and Connor Brown. Hyman gets four years at $2.25M AAV; Brown gets three at $2.1M.

    The bad:

The Leafs extend their own RFA, RD Nikita Zaitsev, for seven years at an AAV of $4.5M.

The Leafs trade F Kerby Rychel, D Rinat Valiev, and a 2018 2nd-round pick to the Montreal Canadiens for F Tomas Plekanec and F Kyle Baun. The Canadiens retain 50% of Plekanec’s salary.

The Leafs drafted: Auston Matthews (1 OA), Yegor Korshkov (31 OA), Carl Grundstrom (57 OA), Joseph Woll (62 OA), Jordan Greenway (72 OA), Adam Brooks (92 OA), Keaton Middleton (101 OA), Vladimir Bobylev (122 OA), Jack Walker (152 OA), Nicolas Mattinen (179 OA), Nikolai Chebykin (182 OA.)

The Leafs drafted: D Timothy Liljegren (17th OA), D Eemeli Rasanen (59th OA), G Ian Scott (110th OA), F Vladislav Kara (124th OA), D Fedor Gordeev (141st OA), F Ryan McGregor (172nd OA), D Ryan O’Connell (203rd OA.)

All I will point to is Lou took over a team that bottom out, went 29-42, to a 40-27 then a 49-26 record. To think he wouldn’t have continued to have a positive impact is stupid. I would have loved to seen Lou running the day to days, trades, contracts, and let Dubas run the drafts.

To say the Leafs are in a better position today then when Lou was let go is crazy. Again, who knows what he would have done, but Leaf fans thinking he did a poor job are nuts.

Why was it a bad idea to draft Auston Matthews at # 1 in 2016?

😂 no, just saying the two drafts he was GM were pretty terrible.
Matthews, Brooks, Liljegren only to see NHL action
