Its at the point now where TOR has little, if not, no flexibility when it comes to their cap strapped team. Unfortunately, Moving on from both Rielly and Marner may have to be done.
For Rielly, i feel Calgary may be a good fit. Giordano is likely on his way to Seattle and theyre looking to keep their top 4 in tack. You could say players like Valimaki or Kylington could fill the void, bit i dont think they can bring the same amount of talent Rielly has to the table. Also, Tielly brings offensive power that Calgary struggled with this year, and without Giordano, you are basically relying on Hanfin, Andersson and Tanev to pick up that slack, who are all solid stay home guys (Hanfin is more of a 2-way player, but doesnt bring the puck moving ability that Rielly has).
As for Marner, i think this trade is a wake-up call for him. Clearly his attitude about playing does not show he is fully committed to winning, and his contract speaks volumes. Arizona is in desperate need of a superstar, and the only one who fit that bill was long retired player Shane Doan. Players like Dvorak and Garland would come back as Dvorak has a very flexible contract, can score and has will to win, whereas Garland can come in, grab a 5y, 5.5m deal, and be a pest that very rarely anyone takes notice of, and put pucks in the back of the net. With OEL also being shopped around, you can look to see Arizona load up on young talent for the future, and build around Marner.
Greed is what landed TOR in the situation they are currently in, and I think Dubas should consider the idea of getting Marners contract out, especially if they want to win now. If it hasnt come to realization yet for Marner that in order to win, you need to play harder in the playoffs, then consider this guy trade bait, and find other guys who want to win, players who put their lives on the line to win every battle and every opportunity for their team. Until I see improvements to Marners attitude, and drive, he is an easy trade target for me.
As for Rielly, this guy deserves nothing more than a cup, but if he is unwilling to sign a friendly contract, then clearly he also does not care about wanting to win in TOR either, similar to what we are currently facing with Hyman.
No. We don't want reilly. Yes i read the description but there are cheaper options in the market possibly
Well, the market for offensively gifted defenceman is pretty slim. Your basically getting a guy who gets pucks up to your forwards, something that you struggle to get out of a lot of defenceman. Thats why I saw Calgary as a good fit, as Liljegren could pretty much well do that for TOR. Unless Calgary tries to bring back Hamilton, idk what else is out there. I only got Hamilton signed here bc hes a hometown boy, and i dont believe he’ll come here, but i can dream

Well none of the players you will want with fair value are available so this doesn't happen

Well beggers cant be choosers. If your expecting Hanifin to carry the offensive load then knock your socks off. But the way I see it, Rielky brings what you guys need, abd with Giordano aging and likely gone, you needs shoes to fill
