Major off-season three-way trade
To DET: Scott Laughton
To STL: Darren Helm
To PHI: Jake Allen (value is low because of his bad contract)

DET needs to start acquiring young assets, particularly forwards.
STL needs to shed Allen's bad contract and make way for a new, solid starting G.
PHI needs a new starting G after not re-signing Mason or Neuvirth.

So STL takes on Helm's less bad contract (by like 500K) to get rid of Allen's? How does that help them at all?

STL is actively shopping for a C (per Bob McKenzie). And to get rid of a bad contract you more than likely have to take one back. In STL's eyes, they win this deal.

To me, this doesn't appear to be a great trade for anyone except maybe Detroit.
