NJ would probably have to send someone that is the caliber of a top line winger to get a tkachuk deal done. They also don’t want futures and think they can compete now (idk why) so NJ probably doesn’t have the pieces for the deal

I really wonder if the Devils should pay all that for a guy who just might be a UFA in two years. There are some cap strapped teams who will "give" some good short term players away. Maybe the cap heavy JVR could a Devil.

But it isn't a rebuild. Flames would get all those young assets, only Jukanenen would be a cap hit in 21/22 and the lots of cap space to get a good veteran winger now

I like the idea of JVR. Similar production to JVR but way cheaper to get. And he would be a short term answer until Holtz is ready

Isn't Tkachuk going to be an RFA, not a UFA?

Flames aren't rebuilding.
Flames want Holtz plus 4th overall.

Guys are sending some mixed signals here.

(also, Devils shouldn't move such big pieces unless if its for a d-man)

Well we’re not rebuilding, but Holtz is probably ready to step in next year, and while 4th overall this year might not be ready to step in, they’ll only be a year out and be a relatively high end piece (probably Beniers, Eklund, or Guenther), so it still fits the general timeline for the Flames and falls more into the retool on the fly category. Guys that will take 2 or 3 more years to develop, as well as a late 1st or lower, aren’t of much interest to the Flames.

That makes sense to me.
Don't think there is any chance Devils move either of Holtz or the 4th though.
Nor any big 5-for-1 type deals either.
If anything, probably a forward and/or the Islanders 1st rounder for d-man.

Tkachuk's 21/22 season is his final year on his current three year deal. Next summer Tkachuk has choice. Taking a longer term deal which takes into past his first year UFA. Or he can agree to qualifying offer (which the Flames or any team would do) and get his qualifying salary of I believe 9m for one year, and then be a UFA in the summer of 2023.
In his case he had played seven full seasons which qualifies him for UFA for in the summer of 2023.

Thanks for letting me know

I would only be interested in Tkachuk if he came with a long term extension then

That's the issue with Tkachuk and the Flames if the rumours are true. Tkachuk just might want to test UFA or least leaving the Flames. Trouba did the same the Jets with the a few years, telling them he wasn't signing long term. Looks like Sabres Reinhart isn't going to sign long term with Sabres this season, "forcing" the Sabres to trade him or lose him as free agent in the summer 2022.
It's kinda of new theme, some RFAs are using their leverage on their destination before they become UFAs.

Rumors are he might want to head to his hometown team, the Blues which might scare teams away from the trading for him

Oh, I think that is the plan in Tkachuk's head. If he a UFA in 2023, the Blues have the decision on whether he fits in their plans and depending on the salary he wants, does he fit into their roster. But he will have other suitors. IMO Tkachuk will have given the Flames seven years of service, he thinks that is enough. And your comment above is correct. Teams have to looking at as two year rental now, so they won't necessarily by giving up so much in a trade.
