Big defence and legit goaltending gets you Stanley Cup

Created by: DripBayless

Description
Look at Tampa and Montreal’s defence and goaltending. Big and skilled, and skates well enough to disrupt forwards. Both teams have top 5 goalies which is a must to go deep in the playoffs.

Tampa has the edge because they’ve got game breaking forwards. Being 15M over the cap also helps 😂

Which free agents are underpaid?

Hamilton - yes he’s seeking Petro money. He hasn’t won a cup nor any medals. He’ll get a deal starting with a 7 in a flat cap.

Saad - maybe a little bit, but I think he’ll be somewhere in the 5s. He’s a second line player.

Nuge - literally had a bad year in a flat cap. This was his range all along. Really he’s worth 5M.

Larsson - his camp and Oilers talking numbers between 3.5M and 4M. I literally picked the middle.

Smith - maybe deserves a bit of a raise.

Yamamoto - has no negotiating leverage. Had a crap year.

All the other guys are bottom of the roster players.

Then your point about depth. Marody and Benson led the AHL in points. They might be solid contributors in the bottom 6.

McLeod and DeBrusk are questions marks, but in limited offensive time, I can see they can tread water.

That top 6? Give McDavid another winger plus another year of Puljujarvi and the top 6 will actually be a top 6.

Yes but the free agents probably don’t care about “what they probably deserve”. They are gonna ask for more. As for the depth. Just because they are AHL stars doesn’t mean they are gonna have a big impact in the NHL. Top six is fine but you need some proven NHL caliber players working in the bottom six with the younger players.

It's just that Gibson and old mike Smith probably provide league average sv% for 8M$ which is concerning and reports on klef seem not great 😬

Different type teams win in the playoffs each year

Moreso a random process than formula ultimately

They never said big impact in the AHL

OP was very sober about the AHL guys:

"They might be solid contributors in the bottom 6."

Both Benson and Marody have been near point per game in the AHL though for years now... very, very likely they're solid bottom 6 players at worst

Their AHL NHLe = 30 points at NHL level

I think it’s easy enough to trade Bear for picks and use that 2.8M in free agency instead. Really Debrusk is a filler here

Don’t think it’s that random. I read an article recently citing the average height and size of dmen on cup winning teams. If I’m not mistaken, I believe the average was somewhere around 6’2 - 210 lbs. Of course those aren’t the only metrics. And I don’t really remember the last time a team won a cup without their goalie playing like a top 5 goalie

I don’t think the bruins would have interest in bear. They have plenty of cap space this year. Makes sense to keep debrusk and move him after next year if he doesn’t rebound.

So then trade Bear for picks and we'll keep DeBrusk. Seems like a win/win. Why would you want to trade for a guy whose a "filler" anyways?

Because people talk about it here in Edmonton. I think unlike most NHL cities, the bottom 6 in Edmonton is kinda stuck in a hard place. The top 6 takes up 45 mins of the game. That leaves 15 minutes of ice time for the bottom 6. For the most part, the Oilers can’t afford 3M+ bottom 6 players.

The 4th line on this team kills penalties. And yes we need to find guys in the 3rd line to contribute 30 pts a season while playing like 8-9 minutes a game. I’d say it’s harder to find those guys.

Ok so then DeBrusk isn't a filler lol. Even with his awful year this year, his per game over the last 3yr still puts him at a 24G/19A player over 82 games. Why would we trade that for a guy we don't need, but could get picks for? We're in win now mode with the window being 1-2 years and having a guy capable of 20+ goals on your 3LW is a huge.
