Additional Details:
Here is why OTT should get McDonagh. They need a serviceable defenseman to play some minutes and Tampa will be trying to move some cap, so this works for both sides. Ottawa can't be playing Thomas Chabot 60 minutes a night, so getting a guy like McDonagh to play about 20 minutes a night will ease some pressure off Chabot and help him focus on being as effective as he can when on the ice. McDonagh is also a great leader in the locker room and he bring the type of good character that a team like the sens are going to need. In terms of what would need to go back to TBL, I think it would be pretty simillar to the return Nate Schmidt got, a 3rd round pick or something around that

I think the deal makes sense if McDonagh had a few years left but with Sanderson coming and with Brannstrom and Mete showing promise I think they are set on the left side. McDonagh's contract is hot garbage and they will likely need to pay to get rid of him (he isn't a bad player just way too much money for a 2nd pairing guy with no offense).

did you forget that we have 3 elite young left shot D? if mcdonagh had 1 year left he might be an option, but with 5 left there’s absolutely no way we take on that contract, it’s not very good on its own, and he doesn’t fill a long term need for us

He has a full No Trade, so nice concept but probably not realistic considering he would have to waive to leaving a cup contender to a team midst a rebuild

Also Eugene wouldnt approve of that deal, his salary jumps up to 8.4m next season and in 2023-34. His contract is more back loaded right now

In that case, do you guys have any other defenseman in mind that can play a simillar role??

Ottawa has a very young team. They need veterans with experience. I think Mcdonagh could kind of bring that. he has a horrible contract tho.

I think a guy like Graves from Colorado would be a good fit in the first two years. Allows Brannstrom to shift back to the right (his preferred) and become the future partner of Sanderson.

Agree with what others have said, not sure OTT is the place for him given his age and term left.

I do think there is a chance he gets moved this offseason, due to cap and Sergachev/Hedman on the left side there.

Also, edit - I think you have the right idea though.

Good idea but im not sure if he would waive to Ottawa or if Ottawa even wants him

Maybe Vancouver, Boston, New York Rangers, Seattle would be interested
