TBL cap dump value question

Created by: alwaysnextyear

Description
*This all assumes the Canucks can pay someone to dump the last year of Eriksson's contract.*

The Canucks (and most other teams) want a Dman like Cernak, but Tampa would obviously rather not give him up. So dumping Tyler Johnson's contract along with him might be enticing enough for them to consider it. The question is how much value do the Canucks still have to add (if any) going back to Tampa? I used Woo (expansion exempt) and a 3rd. Too much? Too little?

For VAN this fills two roster needs, with a very good defensive RHD and a guy that can still fill a 3C role, even if he is overpaid.

I think you need to add. You want Cernak. He’s a top pairing guy for them on a really good deal

I mean, I don't see why not....They probably rather not give up Cernak but if they had to they have Cal Foote that they can replace him with

But they are in a hell of a cap bind again. And there's no guarantee that Seattle will help them out of it in the expansion draft.

I think it's virtually impossible to land Cernak tbh.

I don’t think Tampa is willing to move Cernak unless they’re getting a 1st in return. Even with a cap dump, he is not someone they would like to move on from.

As a Canucks fan, I would totally do the Tampa deal. I don't think you need to do the first deal though. I think the team can sign Hughes to a bridge deal saving about $2M in cap space. You have $2.5M of cap space, so you can put Loui in the minors.

Because he's a top pair shutdown Right shot defenseman on a very club friendly contract and unless you're sending a kings ransom he's not going anywhere

But Seattle helps out Van by taking Eriksson for a 2nd and a meh winger??

SEA could very well take on one of Tampa's overpaid players with sweeteners as well, I'm just saying I don't think they're doing it for free.

Need to account for bonus money though, plus it's nice to have a little cushion.

I'd prefer if both Petey and Hughes did 3 year bridges, but JP Barry mentioned on the radio that he thinks Petey will be a shorter deal and Quinn will be longer.

It won't cost them Cernak. And Tampa's overpaid players can actually play...

True. I could see Seattle selecting Gourde after he bounced back this year.

GM's are going to think does this help my team if that answer is yes they pull the trigger. Murray and Kekaleinin have already proved teams GM's aren't really worried about the supposed"TB cheated" garbage.

I don't see Cernak being used to get rid of Johnson unless you're overpaying. They're contenders and moving Cernak is an unnecessary loss of a top RHD on a great deal. To get Cernak with Johnson you probably have to be willing to move Hoglander or Podkolzin to make them even think about it. I think Foote would be the guy to target in taking Johnson.

I think Hughes could be 4 years vs 3 years. I think that would be smart to have them expire at different times.

I actually think they should do Hughes on a 2yr bridge. Keeps the cap low and also has his 3rd contract coming up before Petey. I worry that if Petey gets 9 or 10 million on his 3rd deal and signs it before Hughes then Hughes will be looking for similar money as he can reasonably argue he's just as important. 2 yr bridge might allow the nucks to lock Hughes up to a 3rd deal in the 7.5-8m range.

Understand your point, but the comparables for centers and defense are different. I think Pettersson's deal will be the internal ceiling for all contracts.

Their agent said that they think it will be a longer deal for Hughes.

Ya I know the comparables are different between centers and defense but there is also internal team comparables that will be brought up based on importance to the team (kind of like Marner using Matthews as a comparable). I know there's the rumours out there that Hughes might sign a bit longer than Petey. I just wonder if that's all a tactic by their agent so that he can use peteys contract as leverage in the 3rd contract for Hughes.

If Petey signs 10m for example on the 3rd contract. Hughes defense comparables might be like Chabot at 8m but then his agent says "look this team needs Quinn just as much as it needs Petey, we want 9.5m or else we will just take the QO/go to arbitration and explore free agency next year. I'm sure Quinn would like to see what the Devil's have to offer."

I really think they should go either 2 or 6 years with Quinn for this reason though I'm expecting 4yrs.
