dude as good as marner is, no team is taking a 10 mill player in a flat cap. in fact you'll have to add assets to equalize it. engvall is a useless 4th liner. if marner made 2 mill less, it would have been affordable.

1. You don't know.
2. Tkachuk is about to cost $9M, so getting a perceived top-10 NHL player for $1M more allows Calgary both cap certainty and the ability to move Gaudreau for an LW (who costs less). It also changes the room, which Calgary needs.
3. Engvall is indeed worth a 5th. However, Tkachuk is not worth Marner, and the cap difference isn't enough to offset that. Maybe Toronto has to throw in a 3rd, but otherwise it's reasonable.
4. Unless you're family, you don't know. Money talks, and Montreal may not want to spend that much money on a guy who should be the 3rd line C.
