Miles wood would bring back the same return as Coleman did and maybe a bit more bc he’s younger and he’ll be an rfa when his contract expires. He’s one of the most valuable third line wings in the league (can also play in the top 6 and he would thrive) bc he’s physical and scores lots of goals. Gonna be AT LEAST two first round caliber assists coming back to NJ for wood. Zero debate.

Lol no. TB acquired Coleman because he was dirt cheap and had term and scored those important goals - and they overpaid on that one big time.

If you're expecting for a same kind of package for Wood, who doesn't have that term, costs more and ultimately has scored only half the amount of goals Coleman managed in Devils per season, let's just say you're going to be very disappointed.

The dude was on pace for a bit more than 25 goals this season. That was the same as Coleman when he got traded. Also woods younger and is an rfa once his contract is up so term doesn’t matter

Wood is better offensively than Coleman
Coleman is better defensively than Wood

Coleman is cheaper but Wood is younger and is an RFA opposed to a UFA

Signing Coleman would be nice on such contract. In retrospect, if Coleman signs with Dallas, in a sense some dealings between Stars and Devils since 1993 would come full circle.

Stars drafted Jamie Langenbrunner in 1993. He played in Dallas until the 2001-02 season, when he was traded on a package to Devils for Jason Arnott.

Langenbrunner played in Devils until 2011, when he was traded back to Dallas for a third round pick.

Devils used that third round pick to draft Blake Coleman. He played pretty well in there until he was traded to TB where he won the cup. Against Dallas.

Now him ending up in Stars would be fairly satisfying lol.

Term had huge importance for TB when they went after Coleman. They explicitly wanted a player with two cheap years left. They even paid a first for freaking Goodrow. That shows you how much they wanted cheap NHL level assets with term.

Wood is not going to be cheap. He has one year left, and after that his QO will be minimum $3,5M. That is twice Coleman earns this year.

He's not comparable to Coleman in any way in a trade. If you want to look for a closer comparable, see what WSH got for Burakovsky when traded to COL. That's much closer in terms of circumstance than Coleman ever was.

The amount of goals Coleman scored in NJ might disagree with the notion of Wood being better offensively. And defensively Wood was one of the worst in the league in 2019-20 when Coleman got traded.

This year Wood has played better in all parts of the game, but his situation greatly differs from Coleman when he was moved.

I'm not saying Wood won't net you value - getting the likes of Lindell would be extremely solid pick up. But what I'm saying is that comparing Wood's situation and potential return to Coleman just fundamentally doesn't work.

Wood plays 4th line minutes and was on pace for 25 goals (82 games). Meanwhile Coleman was getting more minutes and a bigger role which is why he produced slightly more the Wood. But watching them both play, Wood is clearly better offensively

I do agree Coleman has more value but Wood should have a good amount of value too.

Getting a top-4 D for a winger stuck in 4th line minutes...I'd certainly say that's "good amount of value." And as a Dallas fan I'm not opposed to such exchange, but with slight tweaks as D in general is the more valuable position.

I've quite often had a Lindell+4th for Wood+2nd kind of trade set up in here. Imo it just works for both teams.

I wouldn't be opposed to trading Wood for a defensmen, but the Devils should go for a younger defensemen like Marino, Bear, Dunn, etc

Lindell's two or three years older than those guys so I don't see age becoming an issue myself, but it's just my opinion at this point.

By the time the Devils compete (3-4 years), Lindell will be 30 or older while the other guys will be in their mid to late 20s. Not a huge difference but still something to keep in mind. It would be better for the Devils to go for someone who fits their timeline more
