moving the 4th pick

Description
Eliotte Friedman on his most recent 31 thoughts article stated that the Devils would consider trading the 4th pick for a good, young defensemen. Down below are just possibilities if the Devils do decide to go that route. There are certain instances where the Devils would probably have to add more than the 4th pick for some of these defenseman or vice versa where NJ gets a package for the 4th pick if they acquire a dman who isn't on the same level as some of the other options. Personally I'd prefer if the devils went after Dougie Hamilton in free agency and then took either Brandt Clarke or Luke Hughes in the draft, but I guess we'll see. Don't want a repeat of what the devils did in 2013.

You're not getting any of those guys unless you're Holtz/Mercer/Smith++. Boqvist is the only one that is reasonable

Like I said, NJ would have to put together a package for these defenseman including the 4th pick. Not just the 4th pick straight up for the young defenseman.

Why not Jones or Dumba? They are two high end youngish d men that are actually on the block. The 4th is a bit high for Dumba imo but may be close for Jones

I honestly would prefer that or just keeping the pick.

Yeah why would you give the 4oa pick in a draft pretty loaded in defensemen - 4th pick could be any of the top 4 defensemen excluding Power it's not like NJ is right on the edge of being a cup contender. Moves like that should be saved for teams that have a good but aging core who want to take a last shot or two at winning a cup.

That makes sense, but then again it is just speculation and I highly doubt they do it. They could probably just move #29 for someone like Dunn.

I feel like you’d only want to move it for a guy with a higher projection than Luke Hughes. To me that’s Dahlin or Chychrun, probably wouldn’t move it for anyone else (and obviously you’re adding more). Werenski/Q Hughes/Sergachev are all in the range where 4oa straight up kinda makes sense because L Hughes should be around as good as them in a few years, and it would only be a smaller piece added for the guarantee that the active NHLers have. Don’t think I’d swap 4 for Boqvist tbh.

Keep the pick. You’d be adding a substantial amount to get most of the names listed. Just take Clarke and keep those extra assets. Unless you can get a decent deal on Sergachev without too many additional assets. I feel like he would be a stud in NJ’s system. But then I also feel like Tampa would want a different package with NHL ready assets. Could be wrong. I’m still 110% on the be patient train when it comes to NJ so I say leave it alone and concentrate on drafting well

I can see the reasoning if its specifically for a righty. Scouts are divided on Clarke's upside due to his "wonky" stride so if NJ scouts think he doesnt have the ceiling as some of these other guys, I can see it. Every other good defenseman in the draft is a lefty.

    The list should include:

    Owen Power
    Luke Hughes
    Simon Edvinsson
    Brandt Clarke

Whatever name they consider has to be better than those four.
