$900k to fill out a roster spot in the bottom 6. Grit, experience, can be a net front PP guy if needed. Good deal for both sides

I do not like the two year commitment. He was more effective pre-injury so hopefully a long summer will have him in good shape to start next season.

Not bad for Simmonds as a depth piece. Guess he is still trying to chase the cup with Toronto even though I'm sure he could've joined another contending team. He also brings more experience to the Leafs, so I definitely see the logic in bringing him back. Overall, I think this is a good signing for the Leafs.

I feel like the leafs of all teams should be able to attract cheap depth guys that can actually play a useful role, they sign like 8 of them every year. He was atrocious post-injury and did nothing in the playoffs, which is where you woulda wanted him to step up. I guess you can’t hate it for under a mil but they probably coulda found a more useful player for that roster spot.

Not sure why anyone would feel this is a bad signing. Cheap deals are what they need to fill their roster. Wayne was great until he got injured. Also to the comment of the leafs not learning anything…. Keep in mind the leafs were a hot goaltender away from being in the next round. Get over yourselves. This is an excellent signing by the leafs management. He can also be buried for nothing if worst comes to worst.

I get there are non hockey reasons that they like him, and it's hard to say that any deal under a mil is "bad", but I'm really struggling to see why he makes more than 750K×1. I don't see why he's deserving of any sort of term.

He might be playing too well, but if he's happy than yes.

My guess is that he signs with the Habs or Leafs.

Term is a bonus to the Leafs because his cap-hit can be 100% buried.

If he plays well then Toronto gets an extra year at 900k (he's only 32).

If he doesn't play well Toronto can make his cap-hit disappear at any time.

They still can though ... they could sign 5 guys like Simmonds and only play 1 of them ... they still have 17 contract slots left.

Good cheap deal, which is exactly what the Leafs need to fill out the fourth line.

Lots of people on here forgetting that Dubas can just bury him in the minors if it doesn't work out.

Is it weird that I can't see that? I can't see him signing for 2 years if he wasn't guaranteed NHL time

What commitment? The contract can be fully buried. Besides that he is a great character guy who wants to be here and wants to contribute.

There is no such guarantee here. Would have needed an nmc. At the same time why would you bury a character guy like him. No issues with him on the 4th line and pp.

I was off by 100k but I got the term right at least

Before he broke his wrist everything was coming together with Simmonds. Afterwards he just never seemed to get it together. Hopefully the guy we saw at the start of last season is the guy we will get.

Cause if we look first 12 games 5 goals 1 assist and especially the last 6 before the injury he was getting it together. After that for the rest 2 goals and 2 assist the final 26 games after the injury.
