Great AAV, but the term is too much for my liking and the NMC is unnecessary. He can still assist McDavid or Draisaitl on the top 2 lines, but I hoped he could get a shorter term. Overall, not awful by any means. Nuge is still a great player and deserved that AAV or more.

A steal of a deal! Just over $5M for a guy who’s good for about 60+ points a year, has improved at both ends of the ice in recent years, and would have easily gotten $6M+ on the open market.

This proves Nuge wants to win in Edmonton, and a team friendly deal like that will give them the space to add scoring wingers and or depth pieces. Great signing

RNH is choosing term over money which is interesting to see. Might drag down the FA market as well.

Him being worth 5 million at 36 seems like a decent risk to take especially if you're looking to get the Oilers into some form on contention in the next 2-3 years.

I’m not too worried about the term. By the end of this deal the cap should be around 100 mil. Great deal for both sides and good on Nuge for taking a team friendly deal.

Actual steal, Holland makes a great signing for the Oilers cap structure.

Term is scary sure but he wont be that old at the end and hes a 60+ point guy on a team who needs depth. This helps save a ton of cap for a team who could use some flexibility.

Great AAV

The term and NTC is a bit scary but the AAV gets less in the later years so it looks fine

Good extension

I think the term would be scarier if Nuge was known to play a harder, physical style.

A couple injuries sure, but his style of play lends itself to longevity. It's going to be really cool to see him set the all-time games played by an Oiler record.

OK, this RNH deal gives Carolina a far better case for their valuation of Hamilton around the Krug deal instead of the Pietrangelo deal. It'll probably take an eighth year and a NMC, but the case is there now for a relatively reasonable Hamilton extension.

Long term, low AAV might be the new normal for some of the big time (pending) UFA's. This looks like a great deal for both sides.

this is a great signing! AAV is on the low side, but term is on the high side. so fair trade off there
NMC could be a concern if it's a full NMC
last 2-3 years of the deal are light on salary and signing bonuses making it very affordable to buy out if he declines in his mid 30's

team friendly deal through and through

Could have made more on open market

but I guess he wanted term

Contract though does lower market prices for other similar players so thats good.

It certainly makes the Hamilton path far more visible for Carolina, particularly if the latter is willing to give an eighth year and a NMC to lower the AAV.

Now thats where I go no

Hamilton is a Dman and we cant use what forwards make as a reference for paying defenseman. Plus according to Luke Fox, Hamilton wants 8mill for 7 to 8 years (if sign and trade). Hamilton has earned that kind of money and is basically the big fish of free agency for Dman. Carolina wants to give him a Krug which we all know is a significant underpay for him. So I really dont expect him back even if they gave him 8 years.

Just because they're asking for it doesn't mean that he'll get it. This is what the Canes are gambling by allowing JP Barry to scout the league early. My personal bet is that if Hamilton's rights is still with Carolina after the exclusive Seattle negotiating period, that the two sides likely have a deal ready.

Hes gonna get it. Someone's gonna open there wallet for him and give him 8mill. Top 4 RD like him dont come around in FA that often. Winnipeg, Edmonton, Boston, among others got money to spend and knowing his agent hes gonna get him a big payday.

On the contrary, what if teams don't see him as a guy that can flat-out carry a pairing like a Pietrangelo or a Hedman? Carolina's argument is that he's a really good complimentary guy, but one that needs a high-end partner like Slavin to stabilize him. Then the Krug-deluxe comparisons begin to have more weight in the market. This is one of the complications behind assessing his true worth. Similar to Krug, Hamilton's never played major NHL minutes without an elite defensive partner. In Boston, it was Chara; in Calgary, it was Giordano; in Carolina, it was Slavin. Maybe someone still gives him a massive contract, but if so, it's a gigantic risk, especially since the likely contenders outside of Carolina lack the defensive stabilizers on their left side.

Definitely thought he was gonna take a lot more money and less term, but that’s opposite, one of those odd deals. But it’s a great move by Kenny Holland, now go get a winger via FA Edmonton
