that's a fantastic idea to get rid of the Kassian contract, take advantage of the Rangers with the Tom Wilson thing

Thanks. I felt his 3M would be better served in giving Armia a raise as a defensively responsible PK guy. Maybe the Rangers buy into what Kassian CAN be, and not what he HAS been.

Koskinen costs a bit more than what you're offering to Detroit.

If you compare with the Staal deal you'll se that;

Staal was useful to Detroit - Koskinen isn't.

They have rougly the same salary (Staal's was $3.2 million).

That puts the price for taking him off your hands at a 1st or a 2nd and a 3rd minimum. If you want to swap the 3rd for Lavoie that could also work.

How has nobody commented on the severe overpayment on Rakell, coming off 2 down years, only has 1 year remaining on his existing deal, and you're getting both a 1st and higher prospect, this makes 0 sense... I'd rather keep Lavoie and the 1st than get 1 year of Rakell...

So fair. Swap that out with Arvidsson for his term then.

Even that, I wouldn't want to do that, he's injury prone too with the way he plays the game, he tends to miss 20+ games per season, not worth it IMO, would rather take a chance on Forsberg for a season...

What else do we pony up for forsberg? Swap Yamamoto for archi And go

Yamamoto + Lavoie + 1st for Forsberg and hope he sticks around? I love that look but man it would hurt if he left.

Yamamoto straight up for Rakell? I’m sure the ducks would do it. Love keeping archi and the prospects.

Feels like quite a bit, but with Rakell I think your paying for what he’s capable of and not necessarily what he’s done the last two years on a bad team. I also think at under 4m, not many better rentals that count turn into long term solutions.

Thoughts on Yamamoto straight up instead? Just for discussions sake.

I’d do it. Young winger who’d look good along side Z and Comtois

I don't even think you'd have to put Lavoie in that deal, just Yamamoto and a 1st-probabaly even a 2nd given that it's more of a risk on Edmonton's part for 1 year.. Yamamoto and next years 2nd for Forsberg..

You're also quite free to keep Koskinen if you don't like the price.

Detroit will not be short of cap dump offers this year and will, of course, choose the offers that brings the biggest returns for Detroit, and by returns means the usability and fit of the player as well as the sweeteners included.

Detroit isn't running a charity and have no obligation to help other teams out of their self imposed troubles.

While not my central point, the current suggestion is to take on 2.5mil and for a position that the Wings are lacking in; it's pretty much Greiss followed by nothing else (barring Bernier re-signing). For all the **** he gets, he consistently posts league average or close to it through his Oilers tenure and strays into above average when he isn't being overworked (12 games in a row to start the season iirc).

Of course, you're free to suggest egregious prices. However, you're not free to equate 2.5mil in cap this year to 5.7mil in cap next year (regardless of your perception of "fit") nor are you free to equate Lavoie's value to a 3rd round pick without being called out on it.

Detroit already have two goalies.
It's not a secret that Bernier will sign as soon as the expansion draft is over. The expansion draft is the only reason that he isn't resigned yet because if he had been Detroit would have to leave either him or Greiss unprotected.

As much as I love Rickard Rakell, and as much as I think he's undervalued by many on CapFriendly, I don't think he should return the first and Lavoie. We would probably take the first and Archibald (we have no depth at RW) or else Kailer Yamamoto straight up.

Hey I’m fine with you thinking it’s not enough. Det has a ton of money, and I’d love for them to eat some of it. Maybe flip Koski at 50% to Buffalo or elsewhere and you’ve got 3 picks for eating 2M of a player.

Yzerman has stated publicly that he won't do cap dump deals unless the player is actually useful to Detroit.

Any threeway deal would have to be initiated by Edmonton and Buffalo (according to your suggestion) who then approaches Detroit. It's not our job to do your deals for you.

If the players being offered to Detroit aren't a good fit the answer will always be a no.

Three picks for 2M isn’t useful? In a draft where there will be more players from rounds outside of the first see the NHL?

I’m posting for discussion. Appreciate your response.

Detroit already have 11 top-3 round picks in the next two years and there are more to come from taking on cap dump deals of players that are actually useful and fill a need and will play on our roster.

If two teams were to approach Detroit asking us to take on cap to facilitate a trade between them then it will, of course, be looked at. It is, however, a completely different thing to take on a player not knowing if you can get rid of him again. Such a deal would always have to be negotiated by the two teams selling and buying the player, see the Savard deal between CBJ and TBL only two months ago.

There isn't a shortage of deals available for Detroit this offseason. There are few teams with spare cap and a lot of teams in cap trouble. Detroit cannot do all trades they're offered, there's both a 50-contract limit as well as a 90-rights limit and Detroit have to sign a lot of players to fill the two rosters in Detroit and Grand Rapids as well as make sure they don't have to get rid of their picks because they are up against the limit.

Detroit will simply put pick the deals that are most advantageous to them and say no to the rest and one very big part of that is making sure that the deals work both in the short as well as the long term for us. So, no deals for players we have no use for, roster spots in GR are for our own prospects, not someone else's castoffs, and no trades for players in positions where we have no roster spots for them.

Detroit's current needs are; a 2C (like Tyler Johnson), two LD (one veteran on a two year contract like Gardiner or Gostisbehere + a young good top-4 like Vince Dunn), waiver exempt B (or better) prospects (several needed on all forward positions) and one exempt RD that's good enough to do injury call-ups without caving.
