I thought that was just what the Canes had offered, not that they were close to a deal or anything

That’s basically his max but the key is getting that 8 years if you’re going that high(take note leafs)

The first time I’ve ever seen NHL 21 franchise mode accurately predict a contract. In almost every sim I’ve done, he always is locked up 8 years between 7.25-7.75 million.

According to Friedman, the Canes are very close to finishing the extension with Svech, and this was the last known offer from the Canes' camp. It's quite likely that this will be the contract.

Canes have the kind of cap load necessary to go the full eight with Svechnikov. There were some rumors that they wanted to bridge him, but a 3-year bridge would've led them to an offseason where they had to sign Aho/Svech/Turbo/Pesce all at one time. That was...not ideal.

Taking on Johnson doesn’t do much for us. Palat or Killorn, sure. Too much term, underperforming contract and the pick doesn’t have much of a chance to be good.

The reason that I would be interested in getting a first for the Johnson cap dump is because it fits well with the guys that we need to pay. Aho/Turbo/Pesce all expire right when Johnson expires. Necas likely takes cap space currently assigned to Nino and/or Trocheck in an extension. If Johnson's deal had 4 years left, I probably would decline. 3 years, however, is doable.

Our window is opening, adding Johnson doesn’t add to that. Makes it more difficult to keep Trocheck too.

I'm almost positive that this number was reported last winter, but it was said that he turned it down in favor of a bridge deal. Something about wanting to bet on himself, and I wouldn't blame him after his last season where he produced less than expected

You see, though, adding yet another late-first round pick IS an expansion of the window.

According to Friedman's 31 Thoughts, this was the latest offer from the Canes. I think both sides have come around on going for the 8-year term.

Yeah, this has us with 13 million next season to resign three top-6 forwards, two of which are looking for raises. Adding Jarvis on ELC will help, but its still 12 million for Necas, Troch, and Lorentz/UFA bottom-6

I expect Nino to be one to be let go in UFA, replaced with Jarvis. I expect a 2nd line of Jarvis-Trocheck-Necas in 2022-2023. Lorentz shouldn't cost too much, either.

A late first round pick Isn’t worth adding a 5 million dollar contract for 3 years. A 2nd for an underperforming 5 million dollar one year deal. Okay, I guess but still is silly when we need players who perform to their contracts. At least it is only one year. 3 years is a no go for a hopeful title contender.

What I like, however, is that Johnson isn't a complete dead-weight and is actually a decent 3rd-line contributor for most teams. Sure, his contract is somewhat rich on the back half, but this is why getting a first to take it is IMO a worthwhile transaction, especially because it (finally) weakens the Tampa empire at least a little bit.

That comment has that in mind. Here is how I think the cap would work out using rough guesses for the cap hits

      Cap for next year: 13,551,417
Cap after Jarvis 894,167 AAV: 12,657,250
Cap after Necas 4.5(?) Bridge deal: 8,157,250
Cap after Trocheck 6.0x? deal: 2,157,250
Cap after Lorentz 950,000 AAV: 1,207,250
Cap after League Min Scratch: 457,250

So. I guess it works out using my hypothetical values, but I don't think being this close to the cap is worth the late 1st round pick

I'm a huge fan of asset accumulation, maybe even more so than other fans on ACGM. To me, the best deals to get involved in during a flat cap are ones where you take on salary from desperate teams in exchange for picks or reduced return.
