A New TML Idea After Some Input

Created by: MarcN
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 1, 2021
Published: Jul. 1, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Bringing Bogo back at the same AAV as last season. I'd offer him between 1 and 3 years for term whichever he wants. Could probably be convinced to add a 4th year in exchange for other areas of the contract being in the teams favour (NMC, pay structure, etc)

Bringing Bogo back combined with Sandin needing a full time role and Liljegren needing to be cycled into the lineup from time to time, being essentially the #7 guy (dressing 7D doesn't seem to work well), makes Dermott without a job.

Signing Hyman to only $4.25M kind of hinges on other teams willingness to sign him for 7 years at a higher number like $5M. If they aren't willing to go 7, then maybe he takes the longer 8 year contract that only the Leafs can offer him at a lower AAV. Go for the one that pays the most total since there is a good chance this is his last contract, no matter if it's 6 or 8 years.

Kessel would have to agree to all this, so that could easily wreck it all right off the bat...but I'm pretending he agrees.

After the Leafs pay Kessel's signing bonus, his salary is only $1M. High cap hit to hit the floor but low cash payout. Melnyk likes this. Nothing against Murray...but $6M, $7M & $8M over the next 3 seasons is a tough cheque to write, getting paid more than his cap hit. Both Kessel and Kemper are in the final year of their contracts which will help Ottawa have the resources to give new contracts to all their good young players coming along.

Murray does have a modified no trade clause, so it does also depend on his say.

Kessel and Kemper aren't the part that would require the 1st and 2nd

I'm sure I'm reading this incorrectly. It looks like Seattle is SENDING a 2nd rd pick for Engvall...

No...they would select Engvall as part of the agreement where they send a 2nd for Kerfoot, Dermott & 2 later picks.

Dvorak...and the retention of half his salary for 4 seasons, which would likely cost as much or more than just trading for Dvorak.

Pay the 1st and 2nd for Dvorak with half retention and paying Kessel his 5 mil bonus.

Get rid of 11.3 mil in cap for 4 mil in cap...

Giving up a lot assets to get a Kerfoot equivalent at 750k less.

    You don't think they'd be ok with adding Kerfoot, Dermott, Engvall, a 5th & a 6th at the expense of a 2nd?

Dvorak scores more than Kerfoot...he's a better penalty killer than Kerfoot...and he's a legitimate centre, Kerfoot isn't....and Kerfoot would be $1.25M more against the cap and has 2 fewer years left on his contract.

Between the retention on Murray and contracts coming in Ottawa is holding almost 22m to get rid of 12m. Not sure if Kessel and Kuemper are worth spending an extra 10m. Especially if both of them are rentals… it’s creative but I don’t think this would get accepted.

After the Leafs pay Kessels signing bonus, he only earns $1M this season...so he's only a big a cap hit, not an expensive player to pay. Also, both he and Kemper are at the end of their contracts this season, so they come off the books. Melnyk would have to pay $6.5M in cash for both this season and that's it. Murray is $6M cash this season (so $500k less than Kessel and Kemper combined), but is owed $7M & $8M cash for the following 2 seasons. I think if Melnyk has the opportunity to hold onto $14.5M over the next 3 years, he takes it.

*forgot to add in the retained part, but point still remains...I don't think they'll really want to pay all that money to Murray*

No. They can get Kerfoot free. Dermott, Engvall, who they probably get free on waivers, and late picks doesn't equal pick ~40 or better....

Not if they move Kerfoot elsewhere as has been theorized rather than losing him for nothing....but all if this is just speculation anyway.

I honestly think they’d rather see Murray sit his whole contract out with Ottawa than Sens him out with 7m retained to their biggest rival. Adding Kessel and Kuemper for one season in a year where they’re not contending… the deal really only helps Toronto get under the cap. Kessel would be stuck behind Tkachuk and Stuetzle. Kuemper may be an upgrade but again, if an extension isn’t attached to the trade the rental doesn’t really help the team.

    Much better off keeping Murray
