not even a bad contract and the only RD on the market better than Schmidt is Hamilton and he isn't signing in Canada

Schmidt had a down year on a new team during the pandemic and was still our best defenseman. I don’t understand why people think he’s suddenly a cap dump or “another bad contract”. Dude is still a top pairing guy on most teams

Let’s face the truth here, Vancouver needs to re-build. They are a small weak team with too many bad contracts.

You don't trade a franchise player for a contract to buy out... trams trade contracts to buy out and pay for players... try again... Hawks have the space, and a better option to buy out Connelly if needed.

Well good thing its up to Keith then. If the rumours are true he wants to be traded and not to retire, they have to choose between keeping him or getting whatever they can for him, which with his contract and buyout structure, is a bad contract with better buyout.

If you don't like that value though, buy Keith out yourself and we can sign him for a 2x2 and buy out Koski and save 1.25 million for the next two years, then save another 600k for the remaining 2 years of Keiths buyout

I mean...thats not all the options. There are two (and a half) more options that are far more rational. Hey duncan. Do you still want to play hockey? NO. Ok. Then see ya later. We'll keep you on the roster and you can do what you want. We owe you $3.6M. Thanks for the 3 cups, 2 Norris, and Conn Smythe.
OH yes is your answer? Ok...if yes you have two options. Play for us... OR skip out and we terminate your contract like STL did with Berglund and I think WPG did with Buf.

If he doesn't want to play hockey, then he retires which isn't what the rumours say. You need viable reason to terminate a contract in a non-buyout manner, otherwise every team would do that instead of buying out. Him wanting to play hockey is not a viable reason. He has a full NMC, so you can't bury him in the minors, and can't trade him without his approval. Its either buyout or accept the trade that sends him to a team he wants to play for.
If he wants to keep playing but not in Chicago and Chicago won't trade him, then yes that his problem and if he doesn't report then you can terminate his contract.

You're just wrong. That's all there is to it. He says no to a trade. Ok. You're stuck..your play!!! No you say??? Contract terminated. But you still want to play? You might now get to, but we'll see.

I am not wrong, and you need to research how contract termination in NHL works. Otherwise the Rangers would have terminated Deangelo by now. If Keith wants a trade and the Hawks say no, then yes Keith has to report to the NHL team only, if he doesn't report to the NHL team, then yes his contract can be terminated. If the Hawks say you have to agree to terminate your contract to play, then its up to Keith. But if the Hawks want to play that game, they will have to pay full salary to scratch him.

I can send you links to the various pages explaining how contract termination and NMC's work if you'd like to see why Keith holds most of the cards in this situation, especially if the Hawks want to lose his contract.

No we're good. That 1st paragraph is all I was trying to say. $3.6m is not much. The Hawks have options. AD wants to play, but the Rangers can't play him because of his off ice issues. We're on the same page.
