Think he has more value to GMs than people think

Young #4 with some upside left

The contract isn’t a steal but it’s basically market rate for lower end second pair guys nowadays

And have to imagine free agents aren’t rushing to join the Detroit rebuild

He has a heafty contract for multiple years left after a down year. We aren't asking free agents to join us so that point is moot and doesn't apply. It's a 4th to take a chance on him at most, otherwise you can keep the contract and the player.

Wings will do what they did last year anyway, get a 2nd to take a bad contract and plug a hole like leddy

Pettersson was fine the second half of the season / playoffs

Think Steve Y values stability at defense more than you do… 4th is an underpayment here

Even if we split the difference and fair value is closer to a 3rd, I proposed a late 2nd in a weak draft, it’s just not that off base

The more I think about MP to Detroit the more I don’t like it. No one can say where this potential is going to come from and that contract isn’t exactly great. Rather keep the late second rounder in a “weak” draft and sign a UFA. We’ve seen what RFAs like Toews sign for and we’ve seen Tanev & Brodie sign as UFAs just to make a few much higher end guys. Everyone says it’s a weak draft but don’t realize it’s labeled that because the top end talent and not depth.

Prerequisite that the free agent would have to want to sign in Detroit

But yes if Reilly wants to sign for the same money sure that’s probably better

I honestly don’t really get the hate on Pettersson. 25 year old #4. Pretty vanilla but not wildly overpaid. Would be fine with him staying in Pittsburgh if Matheson could be moved for value. Just doesn’t make sense to pay them both second pair money with POJ ready to go

In regards to potential, has shown some offensive flashes but used pretty exclusively in a defensive role in Pittsburgh with a more mobile partner

If Steve parts with a 2nd it would be for dunno not MP. How value is not the same and his contract isnt as good, if you can get a 2nd or 3rd elsewhere go for it, but yzerman won't do it

I think petterson for a fifth would be the deal. There are alot of free agent LD available in free agency. With his contract duration and dollar value, he's barely a top 4 dman and really the pens need the cap space more than Detroit needs petterson so his value is nothing to Detroit. Also Detroit would probably be one of the only teams that would take him maybe.

Players will be drawn to teams for various reasons. I wouldn’t count Detroit out of landing a guy they want because their previous record. I don’t see PP QB in MP’s future and that’s fine but is a need for Detroit. I don’t see him as a difference maker and with that contract I don’t really see a great value. He’s used like a 5D but paid like a decent second pairing guy.

I doubt Yzerman does this it's too much commitment for a player that might not work out in Detroit. The longest contract Yzerman has signed anyone to so far is 4yrs (Mantha) I don't see him taking on the last 4 yrs of a contract he didn't negotiate. At the end of next season Larkin will be the only player on the Wing's that Yzerman didn't sign. I honestly don't see anyone giving up a 2nd for Pettersson If someone was willing to give up a 2nd Pettersson would already be on another team. His contract right now will make him hard to move.

Assuming you’re referring to Dumo… the cost would be a lot higher than a 2nd
