The Eichel Gamble- Read Description

Created by: evelutions2
Team: 2021-22 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 3, 2021
Published: Jul. 3, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I have thought up a way for Buffalo to shop Eichel and get more than the 4 1st equivalents that was their original asking price. However, in this scenario, this is a huge gamble. The target of this would be teams who are cap strapped AND are a cup contender that just needs that extra firepower.

The asking price that I suggest is 2 1st equivalents, 2 2nd equivalents, and a roster player, preferably in the $3-4 million range. Bear with me while I explain my madness. This situation will only work if the target team is cap strapped. To get the 2 remaining 1st equivalents from the original asking price, the Sabres offer retention. 25% gets you 1 extra first equivalent, and 50% retention gets you 2 first equivalents. This is not guaranteed to succeed.

There are 2 possibilities in this gamble.
1. The target team takes the deal at the original offer with no retention and then have to sell off other pieces to make sure they are under cap.
OR
2. The target team takes the retention and forks over a couple extra futures so they can keep their core as intact as possible while getting a elite goal scorer.

For this ACGM I will be using Vegas as an example.

Note: I do not know if the contracts that the players signed in this ACGM are accurate as I am not a Buffalo fan. Any input on the accuracy of the signings would be helpful.
Note: This is not meant to make the Sabres into cup contenders instantly. This is meant to acquire a ton of futures so that the Sabres might be within contention range by possibly 2030, if even that.

I know. It’s a crazy scheme that I thought up. It could work but more than likely this gamble would fail.

I applaud the creativity.

Dahlin will likely sign for 5M on a 2/3 year bridge, or 8M on a 6-8yr contract.

Return for Reinhart is light, I would expect 2A assets and a B/B+ asset. A backup (young) goalie doesn’t usually move the needle for a top 6 Center.

Thanks for sharing!

Honestly you are asking an owner to pay 25M for a player to play for someone else. A player that when healthy can be very effective. It will cost a lot more then that. Imo, if a GM does this, he should be getting a first for every year left on the deal. 5 firsts + the guys you mentioned. Might seem crazy, so is the idea of getting Eichel at 5M for 5 years

I thought the return for Reinhart might have been light. Retaining 50% ups Eichels value that much? Man I thought this was well though out but I guess I was just not thinking enough.

Was 2030 a bit too optimistic?

So what you are saying that Eichel with 50% retention is worth at least 10 assets?

I can see the sabres taking back cap (short term) to help facilitate, but there is no way the sabres retain. I think our owners are really starting to hate paying people to not work for them, plus i dont wanna ruin it in a couple years when its time to pay skinner to not work for them anymore.

Its an exremely bad idea, imagine the optics- you pay eichel 5 million dollars a year to score 100 points on a playoff team while you lose a few lotteries and pick 8th every year (no danger of that this year, seattle probably laps us if we get all futures for eichel and reinhart, which is definitely the best way to go).

Kinda. It’s getting Eichel for 5 years at 5M AND convincing Pegula to pay 25M to him not to be a Sabre. Honestly, it’s a pretty significant ask.

Well the pegulas are stupid so I wouldn’t put it past them. They have more money than sense and should leave the decisions on the franchise to the GM. I highly doubt that the Sabres retain money on Eichel but this is just a crazy situation where Buffalo ends up getting the price that they originally asked for plus extra. It would cost the owners money but this could possibly make the Sabres a better team eventually. Ah who am I kidding, the Sabres will never be good again.

Pegula is cutting back spending. Buf will eventually be good again, when Pegula backs off like he has with the Bills.
