The Parise Situation

Created by: MNBassman

Description
I’ve been nibbling on a big bowl of popcorn for days now waiting to see how Guerin solves this problem…
The other issue I have is way too many Wild fans (IMO) are ready to anoint Addison as Dumba’s NHL-ready replacement…I think this is jumping the gun as I did not see a player ready for a big time role in the NHL yet, plus another year in Iowa will never hurt a young d-man.
AZ to buyout Parise.

What’s your protection list here? If you move Dumba for expansion reasons and an extra forward slot I can’t see them exposing Greenway.

I don't know how Minny could possibly feel comfortable moving Parise, regardless of his desire to leave. And I get it, he seems to want to be moved, but if he retires before that contract is up, Minny is absolutely f**ked with the recapture penalty. My understanding is that if they were to trade him right now, the cap advantage gets locked in at $18.36 mil. If he retires at some point over the last 4 years of the deal, the cap hit coming back to Minny is that number divided by the number of years left on the contract. For example, if he retired before the 23/24 season, he'd be 39, would be leaving a total of 2 mil on the table, and would cost the Wild half of the $18.36 mil cap recapture penalty in each of the two seasons remaining on his contract. Or, if it were 24/25, when he's 40, he'd be leaving $1 mil on the table, and the Wild would be hit with the entire $18.36 mil cap recapture penalty.

That's wayyyy too dangerous of a game to play IMO.

In this scenario, I have AZ buying out Parise.

That’s a great question. I was focusing too much on the trade itself…
I wonder if Seattle would agree to take Greenway and Rask…IF the Wild went this route…as in, bribe them to take Rask if they left Greenway unprotected.

Got ya. That makes more sense to me, given the total $ value of a buyout is only $6.66 mil. The mone wouldn't really hurt that much for Arizona, but I wonder what they're plans are w/regards to a future window? If they're absorbing a buyout cap-hit of around $6.5 for the next 4ish years (Year one is only 2.3), I don't see why they'd really want Dumba. Not that he isn't solid, it'd just be weird (IMO) to pick him up as the main asset in a dump like this, only to lose him when your team is potentially retooled in a couple of seasons.

Hard to say, and I'm probably overthinking it tears of joy

I think they’d probably do that, worth thinking about. But if you move Parise, I think the “need” to move Rask drops dramatically. IMO protect Sturm and Hartman before Greenway if only for the contracts.

I’m on the same page. I agree that Dumba doesn’t make much sense, Menell makes more given the contract situation. But ARI seems to be heading full rebuild and getting the Parise buyout cap hit for very little actual money could be intriguing for them.

Yeah, I wonder if adding a 3rd team to send Dumba to, and send the assets to Arizona would make any sense? Armstrong has a tough gig ahead of him. The fact that he held on to just about everyone at the trade deadline, and didn't recoup assets hurts a ton IMO.

IMO Dumba is too much to add here from the Wild point of view. And I think they still had a reasonable shot at the playoffs at the deadline, so it’s not totally out of the blue. It does feel like a tear down is coming though.

Yeah, they were still there, it was just a horribly short sighted gamble for them to take IMO. Dumba-wise, I assume he's added because of expansion protection on the Wild's side. Otherwise, think you're adding a much better prospect heading to Arizona...just seems like a lot of quantity as opposed to quality for the Yotes to do that kind of favor. Could be wrong though.

I agree the Parise to AZ makes some sense. This feels like a overpay a bit but it's not way off IMO. But I guess if it get Parise off the books free and clear, it's worth it.
I don't think most Wild fans are ready to anoint Addison the Dumba NHL-ready replacement, just more of a move out of necessity, with expansion, the need for a center upgrade, and based on cap restrictions. I do agree Wild shouldn't bring him up before he is ready, which I think will be some time next season, with expected growing pains.
The Joel Armia singing? I leave that as a "to each their own", type thing. I'll say this is a practical approach.

The actual $$$$ payout for Arizona (or any team) isn't that much for a buyout of Parise.....about 7m. But one year of over 6m and two years of 7m in cap hit makes a buyout too hard to take for any team.

Or, if it were 24/25, when he's 40, he'd be leaving $1 mil on the table, and the Wild would be hit with the entire $18.36 mil cap recapture penalty.

That's wayyyy too dangerous of a game to play IMO.

Couple things here.

1) The current accrued cap advantage is $20,153,851. He has played 9 seasons at $7,538,461 which means he has had a net cap hit of $67,846,149 but has been paid $88,000,000 . The difference in those values is the cap advantage and comes out to $20,153,851.

2) The 2020 CBA MOU changed the recapture penalty so that the maximum penalty in any single year can't exceed the original cap hit of the contract. In the event that the recapture penalty would exceed the original cap hit, the penalty can be spread out beyond the original term of the contract until it is paid off. For example, if Parise was traded tomorrow and retired before the final year of his contract, the Wild would face $20,153,851 in cap penalties spread over 3 years as $7,538,461/$7,538,461/$5,076,929. The rule change was mainly to help Nashville if Weber retires with 1 year left on his contract. They have $24,571,428 in cap advantage sitting over their head from that one.

3) The purpose of the trade stated in the original post is to get another team to buy out Parise's contract which would negate the possibility of a recapture penalty further down the line. The team that buys out his contract would simply have the buyout cap charges ($26,820,508 against the cap, but $6,666,667 in real money) while the Wild get off without facing a recapture penalty. Since technically Parise would still be receiving a salary (although reduced) from his contract, there would be no recapture penalty per 2013 CBA Article 50.5(d)(ii)(B). Also, if you do the math and subtract the buyout salary from the total buyout cap charge, you actually end up with the accrued cap advantage so technically anyone who buys him out would be taking a restructured version of the recapture penalty (and then some) for us.

GMBG is stuck with Parise. It's why he made nice at the end of the year. A buyout is too atrocious for any team to take on. So Parise will be here next year. GMBG can only hope he'll rebound into a solid bottom-6 wing. Then Parise LTIR(etire) after that when his take home pay drops to $2m, $1m, $1m the last 3 years of the deal. And then GMBG can try to offload the contract or play LTIR cap games for the next few seasons.

I'm thinking Dumba to SEA. Sign Menell and Cole? Run Brodin/Soucy, Suter/Spurgeon, Cole/Menell. Addison gets called up when Spurgeon gets hurt. If you can't get Cole (or similar) cheap enough then Addison and Menell are both on the team and and it'll be Suter/Spurgeon, Brodin/Addison, Soucy/Menell (I don't like this d-corps).

I'm not sure if Iowa is going to be a tire fire next year or not, so leaving Addison there might be a mistake. I think they've gotten all they can from the '15/'16 drafts. The '17/'18 drafts were pretty weak. If Boldy is in the NHL, the '19 draft doesn't jump out as lighting the AHL on fire. The '20 draft, outside of Rossi, is probably still in the CHL or KHL. So, to me, it's looking like it'll be sign a bunch of AHL lifers and mix a few of the kids in with that; which can be good or bad.
