Klefboms not exempt so you are going to risk Seattle taking a shot on him? He’s suppose to be healthy to start next season right? They could even take him just for the ltir benefits later if he’s not

Vagas seems to be in on everyone every year all while being against the cap. Smith at $5M is an overpay that they could put elsewhere.

I personally don't think Smith at 5m is an overpay. But I see where you are getting at.

There are reports that people close to Klefbom are saying he is closernto retirement than playing again. This thought also lends credibility to why Edmonton seems to be so interested in Keith.
Seattle doesn't need LTIR help and I don't believe Klefbom's salary was covered by insurance for this injury, sorry I can't find the source it was a guest on either Oilers now or TSN 1260 Edmonton. If that is true that's a pretty expensive risk for Seattle to be taking. I think the payment os more than enough for eating $1M cap space.

Seattle doesnt need LTIR help but other teams could. They could flip his contract to a team who needs it.

You dont think Tampa would like to buy a guaranteed LTIR contract off Seattle so they can use it to keep their team depth together. They could get a good asset for that

I didn't know this rule. I thought I read through them all. Thank-you.
I wonder what it would take in a 3 way trade.
Edmonton retains 50% trade to Seattle.
Seattle retains 50% of remaining salary tradingbto 3rd team to buy out. Edmonton eats $1M a year while Seattle and 3rd team eat $500K each a year. Creative trade but little risk for Settle and team 3.

The only benefit to getting Caleb Jones is if it gets his brother to sign here. We don't really want Caleb. He's okay but nothing special. Strome is worth more than this

I see lots of Strome trades where he's dealt for a bag of pucks, I don't get it.

The Seattle trade, if it were even possible, is shockingly stupid. Edmonton saves just $950k x 4 and somehow that's worth a 2nd and a good prospect??

    Asset mismanagement at its finest!

someone correct me if I'm wrong but this isn't how LTIR works. Tampa, if trading for Klefbom, can go over the cap the amount of his AAV but Klefbom's AAV is counted in that amount. So a team in Tampa's position doesn't actually benifit from this considering they are already over the cap for next year. Sure if he was LTIR all year and then ready for playoffs it would work but that isn't what is happening.

Buy him out yourself and the cost is $1.9M x 4.
Retain 50% for Seattle to buyout costs $.95 x 4.
    Savings of $.95M x 4 is not worth a 2nd and Samorukov.

That's just incredibly poor asset management.

this is in response to him retiring. He still gets paid and not playing but teams use his contract for LTIR purposes

again correct me if I'm wrong but adding Klefbom and placing him on LTIR doesn't mean Tampa gets to spend $85.2M on dressed players plus all their LTIR players. They need to get right up to the cap including LTIR for openning night roster then place on player on LTIR. They can then go over by that amount. If they are over the cap before LTIR is used the relief you recieve is simply the amount you are over not the full amount of the player's cap hit. That's why the Oilers were still up against the cap all least year dispite Klefbom being on LTIR

d if you have an unsigned RFAs for exmaple, you can wait to sign them after the guy goes on LTIR and you have the space to do it, teams can activate and use it in multiple of ways

It doesn't help Tampa as they are more than $5M over the cap next year with 12F 5D and 2G signed and no Young players they can send down without risking waivers.
It could work for some other teams, I'm not going through every team, but that still leaves the matter of still paying out the $8.25M owed to Klefbom. After the last year I'm not sure there the apatite for that.

Klefbom will not be healthy to start next season and it has yet to be determined whether he will be able to play again.

Its a given that Nurse, and Bear will be protected during the expansion draft. What is not known is whether the Oilers will sign either Larsson or Barrie before Seattle is given an exclusive window in which to negotiate with UFAs. Rumor has it that Larsson is the priority in Edmonton, if his contract is extended then he will be protected as well. If Holland chooses a 7-3-1 protection strategy, he has no room to include Klefbom or Jones.

Given their current roster and prospect pool, it seems reasonable to project their d-core might look like Nurse/Bouchard, Broberg/Bear, Samorukov/Kesselring or Kemp. Samorukov may be ready for limited NHL exposure next season, but Broberg is probably at least one season away from regular NHL action. Signing Larsson provides time for Kesselring or Kemp to learn the pro game. With Klefbom's future in doubt, Holland has to find a veteran 2LD. He can't gamble on Klefbom being back because his team needs to improve now while not giving up its future.
