What if anything do you thinknis fair compensation for all teams involved?

Just buyout Neal and keep your assets.

Klefbom will not be healthy to start next season and it has yet to be determined whether he will be able to play again.

Its a given that Nurse, and Bear will be protected during the expansion draft. What is not known is whether the Oilers will sign either Larsson or Barrie before Seattle is given an exclusive window in which to negotiate with UFAs. Rumor has it that Larsson is the priority in Edmonton, if his contract is extended then he will be protected as well. If Holland chooses a 7-3-1 protection strategy, he has no room to include Klefbom or Jones.

Given their current roster and prospect pool, it seems reasonable to project their d-core might look like Nurse/Bouchard, Broberg/Bear, Samorukov/Kesselring or Kemp. Samorukov may be ready for limited NHL exposure next season, but Broberg is probably at least one season away from regular NHL action. Signing Larsson provides time for Kesselring or Kemp to learn the pro game. With Klefbom's future in doubt, Holland has to find a veteran 2LD. He can't gamble on Klefbom being back because his team needs to improve now while not giving up its future.

that is what I said originally, the OP mentioned that he might retire. So i just mentioned one hypothetical merit around Klefboms value even if he does reitre,

It doesn't help Tampa as they are more than $5M over the cap next year with 12F 5D and 2G signed and no Young players they can send down without risking waivers.
It could work for some other teams, I'm not going through every team, but that still leaves the matter of still paying out the $8.25M owed to Klefbom. After the last year I'm not sure there the apatite for that.

I just said Tampa as an example of a team wanting to use LTIR money to their advantage, im not saying he makes sense for them. you are getting caught up on minor details
plus not taking into fact that they have to lose someone in XD too, so they their cap space overages will be lesser

example they could lose Johnson in XD, and if needed trade for LTIR money to help even further with their RFA contracts in foote etc

Sure there are hypothetical advantages in manipulating the LTIR, but the probability of either Edmonton or Seattle needing that leverage seems unlikely. It is rumored that Klefbom's contract is not insured, so Seattle might do the Oilers a favor by selecting him. Doing so might save the OEG over $8M in real dollars.

Lol we’re not giving up Smith for nothing; and especially not retaining a DOLLAR. Come on…

as mentioned in another comment. Vagas seems to be in on every big name every year and keep pushing themselves up against the cap. 10 times this year they couldn't dress a full line-up because of thier cap issues. Smith is in the final year of his deal and could/should be expendable because of his cap hit.
Wishful thinking they retain salary but Bennson isn't nothing. He is a prospect that is a point per game player in the AHL and NHL ready for bottom 6 at what will be slightly above league average. The type of player sent back in a cap dump trade. Smith isn't a cap dump on a team with room but in Vagas he is over paid.
