Eat 50% of OELs deal and that’s still a no.

I don’t love Kessel on the canes but I’d accept that offer pretty quickly. Essentially dumping Gardiner and getting a scoring rental for a year at a reduced cap hit without really having to move any assets for him. Would probably take more than that to dump Gardiner on another team alone.

    Canes say yes so fast.

Kessel might not fit the Canes locker room but that is getting retained Kessel + dumping Gardiner for only a 2nd

MTL could give you more for Garland. Drouin (half retained), 2021 first and Harris or Ylonen.

Arizona doesn't want cap dump Drouin. Arizona probably can get more Kuemper alone.
Canes jump on that trade. Two years of the current edition Gardiner is more of a cap dump, so Arizona says no. Kessel could get more at TDL

I feel like these trades help the opposing teams more so, not that I'm complaining about that CHI deal.

An ok prospect and a 2nd rounder in a deep draft for an aging bottom four defenseman who has a 6 year, over 8 mil contract with no retention? There's crap trades, and then below that there's this.

You've all seemed to forget 1 thing... Gardiner when he's healthy is a VERY good defenseman, and he's even been that in Carolina. Often having the best underlying metrics of anyone on the blueline not named Dougie Hamilton, he really does do what he's paid to. As I said, that's when he's healthy, and his injuries haven't been great. However, if he is healthy, it's 100% worth keeping him around, and even if he isn't it's more LTIR cap space.

Yeah but back injuries generally don’t improve over time and even if he’s able to get on the ice I don’t have confidence and I doubt the team has confidence that he’ll be there for the stretch run and the playoffs. Probably best to cut losses and move on so they can plan better instead of having a high likelihood that he’ll be in and out of the lineup. I get the LTIR point but if he’s gonna be bouncing between the lineup and press box due to injuries you can’t really do much with the cap space.

I think you've got that wrong, most injuries go away over time. Jake's is different because it's his back, but for the most part, once an injury has healed (obviously depending on the injury) it's as strong as it is before if it's fully healed. This obviously won't apply to concussions or nerve injuries, but bone injuries, pains and cuts (which make up more than half the injuries in the NHL on any given night) heal well.

If the team thinks he won't be there, they will LTIR him when he's hurt. They do not have to re-activate him if he's healthy. You saw Tampa leave Kucherov on LTIR a month longer than he needed to be. There's no reason to move him at a loss. Dougie isn't coming back so cap space isn't really a worry.

Back injuries are not like other normal nhl injuries (broken bones, pulled muscles, etc). Generally when you have a back injury it haunts you going forward and impacts other body parts down the road since you have to make conscious and sub conscious adjustments to try and avoid more back pain and injuries.

You can see examples of athletes across sports who never fully recover, especially long-term, from back injuries and surgeries.

Again, I understand what you’re saying about LTIR but Gardiner thinks he’s healthy and wants to play according to reports from Canes beat writers so stashing him on LTIR and not getting him off isn’t the same situation as Kuch with Tampa this season. Better to just move on so you don’t have a constant question mark lingering over your team and how to structure it.
