VAN competes for playoffs next season without giving up future assets

Created by: Reason
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 6, 2021
Published: Jul. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think the forward group is fairly solid, especially if Domi can have a bounce back season and Podkolzin plays to expectations.
Goaltending should be fine.
Defense is the achilles heal. Van hopes Rathbone is able to establish himself as a top 4 quickly and the back end manages to stay healthy.

I don't like Domi as a target anymore; we can't spend 5M against the cap on a reclamation project.

I'm not a huge fan of Domi's either, with that being said I don't think Vancouver is getting much of a return on Schmidt, and they may have to take salary back (I've read some articles even speculating Van may have to retain on Schmidt). If Vancouver wants to try for the playoffs next year they are going to have to take some risks, Domi goes way back with Horvat, hopefully they would be able to rekindle some of that chemistry. If things don't work out he is a UFA the following year and Vancouver can add the $5.3 to the rest of the space they will have coming off the books.

Domi and Horvat actually make sense stylistically. As for Schmidt's value if we don't get any value we just don't trade him really. Unless the relationship is completely untenable.

There won’t be a Taxi Squad next year, so Roussel and MacEwen needs to be in Scratches

I'm personally conflicted on Schmidt. I think Schmidt is a solid top 4 which the Canucks desperately need, that being said I could definitely see his contract having negative value down the road, probably when Vancouver may actually be able to contend.

I do think he will be traded though. If he wants out with four years remaining, I just don't see him being here long term unless something changes his mind. Most players that request a trade end up getting their wish. I guess it depends on how badly he wants out.

I think most people still using that function are using it as an AHL demotion. If they are sent to the AHL its the same Cap hit as if they were on the taxi squad.

Nothing here makes me want to rip off my hair, so good job.

If Seattle dont take Holtby (I doubt it), would you pay them a 1st to take Eriksson? (a la Marleau)

I think a 1st is fair value for dumping Eriksson, however I think it would be a terrible move for Vancouver to make. Vancouver will not be a contender next season, they would be lucky to be a playoff team, so to me it doesn't make sense to part with such a valuable asset to rid one year of a bad contract, if Vancouver was a contender it would be a different story. Also, Vancouver's top prospects have graduated to the NHL and their prospects cupboards now desperately need restocking, personally I wouldn't trade a 2nd to move Eriksson just based on Vancouver's current situation.

The Jackets are not going to sell low on Domi.

I don’t think that’s selling low. Schmidt was a better/more valuable player last year, and for a few years prior.
