Why am I not seeing offer sheets

Description
I figured offer sheets would be more prevalent on this site. Curious as to why I'm not seeing Makar signings all over the place - any ideas? Is it because most teams that have the cap space aren't competing and thus don't want to give up all those high picks? Or because they think Makar won't sign their offers? Do they think Sakic will match anyways, so why bother?

Actually, that's a pretty good reason to O/S Makar if he hasn't signed an extension by July 28th - run COL low on cap space and then take a run at Landeskog and/or Grubauer in free agency.

Because in general, teams shy away from offer sheets. They are few and far between. It's almost an unspoken rule. Even when teams do use them, it is very rare that they aren't matched. The last was 14 years ago.

what is this? You screw the team for every year after this year. How do the Oil extend Nurse, JP etc. They are in cap hell with no futures with this.

From the players perspective, they may be hesitant to sign an offer sheet and potentially create a riff between them and their current team. If Makar in this instance signed the $12M per year offer sheet from EDM expecting COL to match, he has single handedly limited what the team can do with the rest of the roster. I imagine that wouldn't go unnoticed in the locker room. My be pretty tough from a young players perspective.

On the other hand you have a situation like Aho, who signed a deal that carries a pretty good cap hit just to speed the contract negotiations along. I guess at the end of the day it all depends on what the dollar figure is.

Offer sheets are tough, too many factors to consider from GMs and players perspective to be mindful of.

Sure, but that wasn't my question. My question is why aren't we seeing more of them on this site?

Exactly. Anyone remember the Dustin Penner offer sheet? Brian Burke got so mad over that one that he set up a place for he and Lowe to fight.

Let next year worry about next year.

But it's not as dire as you make it out to be.

- Koskinen ($4.5M) and Turris ($.525M) are gone next year and replaced with Konovalov ($.842M): $4.183M savings
- Gologoski ($2M) and Russell ($1.25M) are gone next year and replaced with Broberg ($.863M) and Samorukov ($.825M): $1.562M savings

That's $5.745M, here are my projections for the 4 key free agents:

Nurse: $7M (+$1.4M) on an 8-year deal to be signed prior to the Makar signing
McLeod: $1.35M (+$.516M) on a 2 year deal if he plays well (I don't think he'll have nearly as much value as Bear or Yamamoto)
Puljujarvi: $4M (+$2.825M) on a 5 year deal - play dependent, but I don't think he's worth as much as Nuge
Bear: $3M (+$1M) at most - if he's 3rd on the RHD depth chart as I expect he will be, he's a trade candidate

That's $5.741M. It fits, but just barely.

In any case my point was that Sakic is very likely to match, meaning the team then has $12M to go after Landeskog or Grubauer as Sakic won't have enough cap space to give both guys FMV.

Yup, but my point was not why aren't we seeing offer sheets from actual NHL GM's, but why aren't we seeing more offer sheets from armchair GM's on CapFriendly?

Cause it's a complete waste of time, they don't happen. There's enough gibberish posted here to scroll through. We don't need more, along with homerism, cap/needs/ntc neglect, line changes, deep thoughts...

Any realistic OS will get matched. Once you offer something like $12m/yr to a d-man it doesn't get matched but basically messes up the cap and futures of the team making the OS so much it's not worth it.

On this site it is just the same argument over and over whenever people see OS. It gets old reading the same thing over and over. It's fun to use them once in awhile for making a team to see what things would look like, but that is a fun team not a realistic one. I have a few teams like this made but not published. It's just not worth the energy trying to defend the team or the energy of others spent picking it apart. The quality of the discussions in the thread are pretty bad.

They do happen, just infrequently. TBH I think I'd use one this summer on Makar expecting Sakic to match it. It'll put a lot more pressure on Colorado from a cap perspective, and 31 NHL GM's want to see that. Its a valid tactic, I think we'll be seeing more of them in the future.

(In point of fact we have no idea how many times offer sheets have been presented in real life, just how often they've been signed.)
