If anyone bothers to go through the seattle expansion draft tool here, you quickly realize there is an abundance of good dmen available, goalies too, but there is a dearth of good quality forwards. So with Kerfoot being in his prime age and a decent cost...he is likely their target unless they pick up someone else to then trade for another asset.

No wonder Kyle Dubas won back to back GM of the year !

oh wait that was Uncle Lou, the man Dubas thought had less hockey IQ than him.

Decent signing. Fair for both sides but not a discount contract.

I think you’re the only guy that still thinks Dermott can still be a top 4 defenseman. I’m not gonna pretend to fully understand the jfresh chart because I’m not a member of his patreon and haven’t read up on it fully, but is it not saying that his only strength is he’s pretty good defensively for a #7 D, below average offensively, and provides no special teams utility? Seems like a one trick pony you could generally find for league minimum in free agency, especially if you’re a team with the pull that Toronto has. For 1.5mil I’d rather have Hakanpaa for example. Given that they have 3 better LD already, I just really don’t see the need for Dermott at all, especially at this cap hit. It’s minuscule on face value but every penny counts when you’re right up against the cap, seems like they could have found better value for half the price if they were looking for a spare. And if he had an acceptable year on the right side a couple years ago, how come he was passed by Justin Holl, a guy who couldn’t even get into a game a couple years ago? If he can play the right side on the 3rd pair it’s essentially meaningless, he’s not making any sort of impact there, any more than he would on the left side of the 3rd pair or in the press box as the #7.

Dermott (age 24) is 5 years younger than Holl (age 29). Holl did not mature into a good defensmen until age 25-26 and Dermott is better than Holl was at age 24. Dermott still can become that 4th D and be as good as Holl is and continue to improve on the right side. He just needs the playing time. This year it look as if Dermott struggled with confidence. Especially at the beginning of the season. I think also they are planning on going 7F and 3D and protecting Kerfoot. That will leave two of Engvall, Spezza and Simmonds as the forwards and Holl and Dermott as the defense exposed based on the current lineup. So most likely Holl or Dermott will be selected.

Remember when Lou gave Ron Hainsey 3mill x 2 years or decided that Polak should be brought in twice or overpaying Zaitsev for one good year instead of bridging him

good times

Man Lou really didnt do much for this team if you really think about it

Like honestly whats better

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Dermott

Dubas

or

Rielly-Hainsey
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Dermott-Polak

Lou

Like honestly if you go through Lou's time period with the leafs no wonder Shanahan got rid of him. Instead of making a big splash at 2 trade deadlines he wasted 2 seconds on 3rd line centers rather than go for the NYR Mcdonagh + JT Miller trade.

We all know Lou got the easiest job being in NY organization as he really did not have to do much other than bring in Trotz and sign Varlomov. Dont forget though he traded Toews for nothing and could have easily got more and signed Martin to to much money and term.

for 4 years thats not a good contract for a 4th liner on a team who is up against the cap

Majority of Islanders fans agreed to much money and term for a 4th line enforcer

Don’t get me wrong great signing, but he was supposed to be the guy taken for the expansion, so this has me wondering.

That's WHY he was signed. Without this signing or another similar one, they can't go 4-4 because someone needs to be exposed.

I agree it's a good signing though.

Dubas ranks in the bottom 5 in NHL GM's every year. Why do you worship him ?

Its a flawed system rigged for the old dogs. Like when you got Sakic not getting GM of the year after he robbed Lou of Toews yeah you know its a rigged system.

I dont use the gm of the year system to determine how good a gm is. I use outside analysis not other gms voting in rigged fashion for their buddies to win.

Old Gm's dont like the new philosophy of the modern gms and instead vote for guys they know. Its basically a rigged system for old gm's such as Lou to get easy votes. Lou could trade Matt Barzel for PK Subban and still win gm of the year next year. Until they actually get a proper voting system its not a good ranking system to go by for any gm. Also voting should be done before or after the playoffs. Round 3 is not a good benchmark for GM success. Its either win the cup and win gm of the year or have an incredible reg season and win.

How is he a bottom 5 gm?

Not saying he's a gm of the year but he's made a lot of good moves. He's slightly above average I would say.

Not really, he's a solid 3rd pair guy.

This might be slightly too much for Dermott but it's certainly not terrible.

like I said, he'd be a 7th defenseman on a lot of teams.
The only reason he's not in TOR, is their cap is broken due to dubas, and that has left the defense looking like hell the last few years.
I don't think anyone who actually pays attention to hockey can argue otherwise. This guy would be in the AHL still if TOR cap wasn't broken. Then again you they wouldn't all be calling Holl a 2nd pairing defenseman either.

Can't use that argument anymore, they were 7th in goals against this year.

Habs went to the finals... the North was not a bad division.

You "leafs are trash because their defense sucks" people just don't want to admit you were wrong. They are by no means a defensive powerhouse, but they are still decent in terms of defense.

Brodie-Holl are equal to Hainsey and Zaitsev, Dubas pays that pair $8 per season while Lou paid $7.5 for his pair.

lul that comparison

Brodie is significantly better than Hainsey or Zaitsev and Holl has been better and makes only 2mill. So you already got that number wrong lul its 7mill not 8.

got a good laugh out of that comparison thanks

comparing brodie to hainsey and zaitsev whats next Mcdavid being similar to Victor Rask or Travis Boyd
