Kinda pathetic. Rather just keep him if everyone still wants to live in their little bubble and act like he's still really bad.

Just remember that Winnipeg offered Nikolaj Ehlers for Ristolainen one for one 2 years ago and the Sabres turned that down. Now I'd rather keep him and extend him than dump him for next to nothing.

    following up here: https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/2538164

I looked at all the Risto offers since June 15th, Sabre fans are expecting the pick equivalent to 24th overall pick in return.

The most that I would do is a 2022 3rd. I think that part of the reason he’s been so bad is because he is playing over his head on a team that is very likely bringing him down. I’d give him a chance on the second pair and I think it is possible to get back a similar pick if needed.

I think 2022 4th would be smart since we have multiple picks in that round

That's true but you could say that for Johnsson/Butcher too

I would say that about Johnsson after all that went on this season. For Butcher, I just don’t see him getting consistent playing time on this team anymore with how many LDs there are in the system. I think he’s shown that he can still be productive but his game doesn’t fit what NJ needs.

One caveat to a Risto trade is I would only look into it after all options were looked into for a Tarasenko & Dunn trade. That would fill two holes in the lineup and make a Risto trade unnecessary.

I wouldn't play him over Severson or Subban. So 3rd pair
Even on power play, he is not starting over Smith, Subban or Severson.
Unless we would put him in the crease, as Buffalo did.

He is very poor on possession and that is an area we are building around.
He is one of league's worst at completing def zone exits, one area we greatly need to improve to avoid having long shifts pinned down in our own zone.
His pass completion rate is average at best, but awful in 5v5.
His close-in defense is decent, as is his stick work defensively.

I don't think renting him for a year helps develop our young core (unless the aim is to get more shots on Blackwood).

I'd rather bring back Tennyson or Sami Vats for a year. Or just give RD3 job to a rookie and let him run with it.

We need him as the net front pressence. That's the only thing he's good at

I wouldn't mind keeping Butcher for one year (flip at deadline) since our LD aren't ready yet. He looked decent towards the end of the season. Our best bet is to see if Butcher can bounce back, then trade him

I really like the idea of Dunn+Tarasenko deal. My only concern is the cost

That is the only sensible part.
It is certainly a hole for us...but getting Nico back, Foote into lineup, we should be in better shape already.

    PP 1
    Kuok-Risto-Yegor
    Jack-Ty

    PP2
    Zacha-Nico-Bratt
    Subban-Holtz

**Risto not actually taking the draws, just in front of the next**

Swap Foote for Kuok (need that shot on that dot)
And PP2, put Holtz in bumper, so

    Zacha - Nico - Bratt
    Holtz
    Subban

He’s definitely not my top choice, I’d look through all of the options before coming back to him (Dunn, Bean, Foote, Fabbro) but I don’t think that he would be as bad as he has been in Buffalo. I just don’t want to put a rookie in that position. Ultimately NJ needs to get 2 defenseman for next season and I think that there could be a combination of defenseman where Ristolainen makes sense.

Just give me someone who can (a) block shooting lanes, (b) get the puck out of our zone and into playmakers hands, (c) can be here for multiple seasons.

    Whomever, wherever, however.

Everyone on this site looks at his +/- GM's look at his hits, pts and TOI.
Who do you think understands the value of hockey players, better Cheveldayoff and Chiarelli or the armatures on this site?
I have been unable to find out what Brisbois offered for him three years ago, but I am sure it was significant as well.
I will go out on a limb and say, he just might bring back more the Reinhart if both are traded.

Ristolainen would bring back more than Reinhart?

    Get ready to be floored.
We are all know nothing experts.
Three GM's (Chiarelli, Cheveldayoff and Brisbois) thought Ristolainen was the key to improving their teams.

I agree with you but that is completely irrelevant to Ristolainen's performance and abilities.
