Description
Rutherford is a reputable Blues reporter with solid information any time he airs stuff like this, and he says Vladdy is 99% being traded.

So, what are the Blues going to get? Hopefully one of these things:

Cap space - I wouldn't mind a deal that sends VT to an up-and-coming team (if he chooses to do so) that has plenty of cap room and draft capital to facilitate the move. Something as simple as a late 1st or some 2nd rd picks from LAK, NJD, EDM, etc

Hockey trade - teams without the cap room are going to stick to offers that involve a player they wouldn't mind replacing with Tarasenko for a couple years. Something like Kreider, DeBrusk, Eberle, etc.

The big return - I suppose the Blues could retain and try to trade VT as a $4m player and go after an even bigger package, something like a roster player + prospect + pick. They could probably hold this type of asking price within the division as well. (My philosophy is if you're winning the trades who cares who you're trading with, altho this probably won't be a trade that the Blues win.)

So what are the risks?
There are always a lot of risk factors at play when you're talking about a guy that was, at one point, a top-10 producer in the league. This chart pretty well sums it up - https://twitter.com/JFreshHockey/status/1412947717341556743?s=20 - are you getting anything close to his 2014-2019 performance or is the dot that shows his poor season going to be more of the norm? It sounds like the Blues have shopped around and teams aren't very enthusiastic about the prospect of paying up for a 7.5m gamble. Any trade requires medical clearance though, so a team that makes the move will have done their homework on the shoulder and would be confident that he can last the remaining 2 yrs of the contract.

For the Blues, the risk is that you walk away from the trade with nothing but a lesser player or crap-shoot draft pick or you open up cap space but can't fill it with the parts you need. But you risk team/chemistry issues if you keep him on the payroll and cause a rift in the locker room. So they're pretty much in a no-leverage situation. It sucks that it's ending like this, Vladdy is one of my favorites.

What do you see happening? Any of this sound legitimate?

would love Tarasenko in NJ but don't think I'd give two 2nds for him, injuries are a concern and the Devils have misused a ton of 2nd round picks over the past few years.

Just to play devil's advocate (no pun), wouldn't the missed picks in the 2nd indicate that trading them for a NHL player could work out better? How does the risk compare that neither pick becomes an NHLer with 100+ GP vs the risk that Tarasenko doesn't play 100 more?

I hear you but I just don't love the thought of trading two more 2nds for an injury prone vet after the Subban, Mueller, Johansson, Gusev experiments. I would like to think Tarasenko would work out better than those guys but you never know, everybody thought we were getting a top 4 D with Subban and look how that turned out. I wanted Hoglander with that pick too lol. Good teams find talent in the 2nd round, I think it's time they use some of their 2nds and 3rds and actually find some value.

I would be more willing to do something like this if Dunn was involved, wouldn't be opposed to moving the NYI 1st if that was the case.

Oh I misunderstood what you meant about the picks, sounds like they've already traded too many away.

If I was the GM and the Devils were calling about Dunn + Vlad, I'd probably wanna talk about the NYI 1st and Foote, but I'm not sure if the Devils would see it as a necessary move. They can probably be pretty patient with their core being so young/on the way.

Wild doesn't have the cap. Also, T's age, contract are why this isn't happening.

Having/ trading for C's is more important to wild. Not trading for a Winger, much less an older one coming off two bad years due to difficulties from recovery from surgery
