Ducks make progress or they dont

Created by: Jphaxx
Team: 2021-22 Anaheim Ducks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 9, 2021
Published: Jul. 9, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In this scenario, the ducks use some of that cap space to take on some salary for picks and prospects and swing trades for some reclamation projects.
- Getzlaf returns on a yearly Joe Thornton-type deal and will likely not play 82 games.
- Carrick returns to lead the Gulls/fill in when needed at the NHL
- Henrique gets taken by Seattle
- Last year's kid line sticks together
- Sam Steel needs to decide that he's a top 6 forward
- Sonny Milano sticks around to see if he can provide any spark
- They use the cap space to act as the 3rd party to retain salaries at the trade deadline or to swing for Eichel/Reinhart
- Fowler is moved out, making way to see what they have in Mahura/Guhle/Fleury. (Did I give MTL too little/too much in compensation?)

Trades
1.
2.
ANA
  1. 2021 1st round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Boston looking for secondary scoring and not rebuilding means they'd be willing to part with a low 1st.
BOS
  1. Rakell, Rickard
  2. 2021 4th round pick (ANA)
  3. 2022 5th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Arvidsson (4.5M) went to the kings for a 2nd and 3rd. Rakell is similar in that he's previously had 30 goal seasons and less of a cap hit. 4th and 5th to upgrade the 2nd to a 1st.
3.
ANA
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. Drouin, Jonathan
  3. Poehling, Ryan [RFA Rights]
  4. 2021 2nd round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
MTL gives up Poehling's rights to dump Paul Byron's contract, and shed Drouin (5.5M), who wasn't even part of their playoff run to replace Chiarot (who I think they hope will be taken by SEA) with a younger, mobile puck mover in Cam Fowler who won't have to play in the top pairing. MTL throws in Tampa's 2nd to get more cap space.
MTL
  1. Fowler, Cam
  2. 2021 5th round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Anaheim (hopefully) gets some more scoring, with Drouin (if he can get his head right). Drouin gets to go to a low pressure market with a chance to find his game again. Paul Byron replaces Carter Rowney, ANA gets draft pick and prospect to take the net 2.4m cap space.
4.
ANA
  1. Virtanen, Jake
Additional Details:
Vancouver I'm sure would be happy to ditch Virtanen and can use that cap space. Heinen's last contract was more (2.8m) but his numbers have declined since that contract. Maybe he takes less to try it with VAN, or they just let him walk as a UFA and take the cap space.
VAN
  1. Heinen, Danton [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
This was talked about during the season. Heinen picked it up towards the end but was in and out of the line up.
5.
ANA
  1. Vesalainen, Kristian
Additional Details:
WPG doesn't seem too keen on his future. Swapping two former 1st rounders to see if they can live up to their potential
WPG
  1. Larsson, Jacob
  2. 2022 4th round pick (ANA)
Additional Details:
A little older, but with more experience. Ducks throw in a sweetener to get it done for any forward with offensive potential.

MTL passes. There's no need to move Byron's contract, they need Poehling and they probably prefer to leave Drouin on LTIR honestly for the cap relief

I didn't think about the LTIR aspect of Drouin's situation... Are they hoping Chiarot gets nabbed?

Winnipeg would have no interest. They need top 4 defenseman. Another bottom pairing guy, especially LD, does nothing for Winnipeg.

I don't know if they are hoping he gets taken but if hes taken instead of Allen they get greater cap savings so I don't think they will be overly hurt.

Honestly Chiarot is a decently mobile puck mover who is defensively sound he is just playing too high up in the line up

Ana would need more for Fowler as there are no significant assets coming back.

Virtanen is going through legal allegations so I don't see any team trading for him atm.

No chance WPG moves him after all the chances for better players that they have turned down for him

Paul Maurice had good things to say about Vesalainen and how he could be in the mix for a spot on the 3rd line (assuming Appleton is taken by Seattle), which would give that line offensive firepower while maintaining its size (6' 3", 207 lb).

Out of curiosity, what other offers has WPG gotten for him?

Over the past 2 years in every trade they have been rumored to be involved in he has always not been available. Its been multiple seasons they have chosen not to move him even though teams have tried.

I don't have rainman memory enough to pull out any specific article but it has been brought up a few times but guys like EF and Dregs

Ducks could get more for Rakell
Fowler isn’t going to be moved he’s next captain
Virtanen is done in the NHL
Doubt Winnipeg does it

I don't actually think they can get more for Rakell... comparing to what Arvidsson just got moved for, I think that's probably fair. I think that if Bob Murray was offered anything involving a 1st this past deadline, he would've moved him

Ardvisson was moved for that price because of Seattle. Nashville knew he was most likely going to be taken if they didn’t protect him so they got what they can. Ducks will protect Rakell and most likely trade him as a rental at the TDL. Rakell is also a bit better than Ardvisson.

I still think LA got Ardvisson for a steal of a price. Nashville could’ve gotten a better price for him.

Don't agree with every trade but like that it seems at least well thought out.
