I had an idea for a trade that involves some Expansion draft shenanigans.

To VAN: Copp + Appleton + Stanley
To WPG: 4th 2022 + Future considerations

This trade is made before the Expansion draft. The Canucks have protection spots available to protect all of Copp, Appleton and Stanley. Winnipeg goes through the Expansion draft relatively unscathed.

To VAN: 4th 2021
To WPG: Schmidt + Stanley

After protecting Stanley in the Expansion draft, the Canucks send him back to Winnipeg along with Schmidt to complete the Future considerations from the first deal.

Overall trade is Schmidt for Copp + Appleton (picks can be changed to even the value) with the added benefit of Winnipeg not having to expose Stanley in the Expansion draft. Canucks get a solid 3rd line and the Jets get to keep and improve their defense.

The jets offered a lot more than the Canucks did last off-season but Schmidt Didn’t want to come to Winnipeg
