Position of strength

Created by: MattyMadden28
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 7, 2017
Published: Feb. 8, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This trade allows Tampa some flexibility in the expansion draft and cap for signing Palat, Johnson and adding to the roster through ufa. Toronto can afford to take these short term contracts and fill in the holes.

This is how i see the trade break down

Bozak = Filppula. Same term similar money and age. Bozak doesn't have a no trade clause.
Garrison = Marincin. Garrison is much older. Marincin is younger and cheaper with out a NTC. Fit short term and long term for Tampa on the bottom pair.
Komarov = Callahan. Komarov and Callahan play a similar style although Callahan looks to over the hill and is an anchor for Tampa with term and cap hit. Komo is younger and better suited for Tampa with one year left under 3 mill.
Droiun >> Kapanen. Obviously this is torontos target player and although Droiun is good and proven, it will be hard for Tampa to pay everyone next year. Kapanen is a risk but has shown that he has the skill to be a potential top 6 scoring forward and still has 3 year ecl left.
Like I said before, this trade is completed for cap reasons. Toronto has the cap and expansion draft flexibility to make this trade. Toronto can buy out Callahan in the last year of his contract.

If I was TB, No way, even in their bad cap situation i would think they could find more. Not to mention the improbability of Callahan and Filppula waiving their clauses.

I hate that this makes some sense because I want to puke at the thought of taking on Callahan. Drouin is the player you clearly want so the question becomes, how much better is he than Kapenen and are you taking on enough salary or too much, to justify the trade?
Take the salary retention out of the deal as well as the pick, needless complications. A year each of Filppula and Garrison @ $9.6M on the cap versus Bozak, Komarov, and Marincin @ $8.4M plus three years of Callahan @ $5.8M, and Drouin needs a new deal next year, most likely a bridge deal comparable to Galchenyuk range, mid $2M's. Drouin has a much smaller sample size than Galchenyuk and he has last years tantrum to consider.

This breaks down to Marincin and Kapenen for Callahan and Drouin + $2M. Is Drouin worth the $17.4M against the cap over three years that Callahan brings with him? Does Marincin get any better or is he done developing? He has had some bad games but he has also been very steady at times. Young D like him can be worth a lot more than we think down the road.

Personally I think it's a little early for this type of deal. Look at last years deal for Carrick, cap space is a big asset for contending teams. Callahan is or was a good player but that contract really puts TB in a tough spot. I think the Leafs can do better.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. In considering a Drouin for Kapanen for 3 more years of Callahan I think it makes sense for a few reasons. First it's swapping a potential top 6 RW for a more proven top line LWer which works for the leafs. And Callahan, although his contract is the worst, falls in line with the term the leafs can afford to pay to get a more proven winger that, as you mentioned, doesn't have the gp'd to deserve a huge contract but still might opt to get a 7-8 year deal that pays him fair. Callahan would also serve as a vet that could be leaned on with this young group. I'm sure Babcock would love having him in the lineup.

Again thanks for the thoughtful reply.

this trade makes a lot of sense for both sides, but I don't see the Leafs making this kind of a shakeup considering their position. They could easily slip out of a playoff spot if they mix the chemistry up. Guys like Filppula and Drouin could obviously help, but giving up leaders like Bozak and Komerov could hurt the locker room.
