I think people are exaggerating the awfulness of this trade.

Value wise the trade seems reasonable. Yes Keith is aging, but people take gambles on aging players all the time. Perhaps with a little lightening of minutes/competition Keith can accel. And he brings leadership it you believe in that. Jones has some upside but is mostly depth and a third is not huge value. So from a pure value standpoint it's fine.

The reason I think this trade is dumb is that it was just a terrible target for Edmonton to use finite cap space on.

So I more feel like Edmonton lost than Chicago won hahaha

That's what I take issue with more than anything. I think some folks here are undervaluing Jones a bit, but yeah he's probably not winning the Norris anytime soon. And a mid 3rd round pick is basically a crapshoot.

But I can't wrap my head around having him eat up 5+ mil of cap space when Edmonton has a bunch of RFAs to lock up and BADLY needs to add a competent starter under the age of 35 as well as some scoring depth

"Leadership" is the most overrated intangible in hockey. I'm not saying it's not important, but it's not worth $5.5M AAV in a flat cap world when you have 2 of the top 3 players in the NHL.

You know why DK won 3 Cups? Because he played on a great team; The most talented team in the league. TBL were the best hockey team over the last 3 seasons. They lost to CBJ because they didn't have enough depth, not because Stamkos, Kuch, McD, Killorn, Hedman, etc... weren't great leaders.

In order for this trade to be a W for the Oilers, DK must produce on both ends of the ice AND provide the team with strong leadership. Yes, he needs to be a presence in the locker room, but his presence on the ice is what will determine this team's fate come next April-June.

This trade has made the CapFriendly HOF for "Most Lopsided Votes."

Please note, that doesn't always mean it'll work out that way... Sam Bennett to FLA, Blake Coleman to TBL, Taylor Hall to ARI, and Subban to NJD, off the top of my head.

...But, it's not a great sign.

Voted for the Oilers on this one as Keith does have a big cap hit he is only owed 3.6 million combined for the next 2 seasons. Smith, Yamamoto and Khaira will take about 8 million in cap combined so the Oilers had the cap space to spare and now the Kraken are not left with much to choose from the Oilers. No downside I can see.

There's some weird thing in his back diving contract that if he retires next season the Oilers get like 3mil in cap relief. If that happens Holland is seen in a much better light.

I have a feeling this may be one of those trades that end up working out for both teams. But as of right now, Blackhawks are walking away like bandits.

Could be if Keith turns out to be pretty good.

But I could also see Jones becoming like a top pairing defenseman (with his bro maybe?) in Chicago and Keith getting waived or something. This trade looks horrible for the oilers right now.

So..... At what point do we entertain the idea that Edmonton won this trade?

At the end of the contract. He's still a positive asset for Edmonton, but let's see how negative he is next year.
