Hometown discounts and expansion trades and Nolan Patrick

Created by: hockeybadger
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 12, 2021
Published: Jul. 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buyouts:
- Virtanen (either 50K or terminated)

Trades:
- Philly is a good fit for Schmidt and idk what the return would be, but Benning loves his reclamation projects so I picked Patrick. (if not Philly he could definitely get moved somewhere else like New Jersey)
- Lind for Kerfoot was a comparable to the Johnsson for Anderson trade

Expansion:
- Holtby is probably the best option, they could take him and then flip him to another team at 50% for an asset (if they decide not to keep him).

NHL Draft:
1st Round: Kent Johnson (sign him by the end of the year to play in either Vancouver/Abbotsford (local guy!)
3rd or 4th Round: Trevor Wong (another local product that could drop in the draft, but he is ultra skilled)

RFA Signings:
- Petey and Hughes are both getting shorter term deals (per Dhaliwal, Friedman, etc)
- Petey is looking at something like Barzal ($7 x 3 years)
- Hughes can't be offersheeted and isn't arb eligible so he probably gets $5.5M-6.5M depending on the term (2-4 years)

UFA Signings:
- Barrie comes home at something in the $5M-$6m for 4-5 years
- McCabe missed most of the year, but has been very very solid in the past although being stuck beside Risto in Buffalo (good buy low candidate)
- Hamonic on anything at or under $2.5M for up to two years makes sense
- Only way Edler returns is at a cheap deal ($2M is still pretty expensive)
- Same situation for Sutter as Edler
- With Holtby gone, and Demko primed to play 50+ games, back up goalie is not a position the Canucks should spend a lot in.
- Good old local boy in Reimer could be it if he's willing to take the cut (I'm not attached to him at all though lol)
- Gotta give the local boy Tristen Nielsen a shot with the Abbotsford team! (same with Irwin and Burroughs)

Seattle has 20 better options in the entry draft and UFA goalies than taking 4.25m Holtby.
Not sure if the Leafs have any interest in non NHLer Lind.

Seattle needs to reach a cap of ~$62M and if they are incentivised then it does make sense to take him.

Toronto was interested in "non-NHLer" Joey Anderson and this is the same kind of trade. The player isn't really the point to it, just the framework. Whether your looking at a Gadjovich, Lind, Highmore or even a pick/prospect from another team doesn't matter, Kerfoot is a guy that'll get dumped because of his cap.

Schmidt to Philly seems like a fit that I've thought of as well and Patrick would be good to get in return as he fills an organizational need and fits in with our core, but he is risky given his injury history. I don't know if Philly can absorb Schmidt without sending back at least some cap so I had Braun coming back to Van as well as a one year RD stop gap.

The rest of this I don't really like.

Seattle isn't going to any problem reaching the cap floor. There are going to lots of high priced NHL veterans available in the draft. Plus they can sign UFAss. Holtby is terrible value which is why so many Canuck fans want him to be gone.
Leafs are going to lose of one of Holl, Dermot and Kerfoot to Seattle. By trading Kerfoot for nothing, the Leafs lose two NHLers. Leaf still would have find a 3C if they lose Kerfoot, so it's not like the Leafs save 3.5m in cap.

I obviously went with the theme of getting BC guys, but at the end of the day all these guesses we're making here on Cap Friendly are very similar.

    1. Get a top 4 defenseman (or two)
    2. Find a 3C/Winger to cover for Miller playing 3C
    3. Trade Schmidt for cap relief/reclamation projects)
    4. Move Holtby
    5. Take advantage of the Expansion draft (Top-9 F/Top-4 D)

The only difference is who we subjectively want in those spots.

Your right that's pretty much the framework for a successful Canucks offseason. I don't think it's realistic to think that they'll hit all of those points in one offseason though. Moving Schmidt would be an opportunity to address point 1 or 2, hitting two birds with one stone. I think hitting three of those targets would be a pretty good offseason if we're being super realistic.

Holtby would also be a good fit in Philly, we could send him with retention with Schmidt. As I said before, we'll have to take a decent amount of cap back and I'm not sure there are many options. If Philly can find a way to absorb a net gain of ~7M in cap (including sending Patrick and Braun out) then absolutely. Maybe they get lucky and Seattle takes Voracek or van Reimsdyk.
