Did you see how CHI held EDM over a barrel with Keith? Same thing is gonna happen when CHI comes calling on Jones. They're not gonna take the Seabrook contract, not because of cap hit, but because of actual money owed. Small market teams like CLB can't afford to pay out the salary even if insurance is paying a portion on a player that will never play again. It's gonna be Jones with no salary relief, unless some good assets are coming back.

Unfortunately, the pick isn't enough IMO to take on the money portion of Seabrook's contract. CLB is a small market team and teams like that can't take on the money owed (not the cap hit). When ARI was taking on all those LTIR cap hits to gain picks and players, they were taking on guys that had front loaded contracts. When they traded for these players the cap hit was large, but the actual salary was low due to the way the contract was structured. Teams like Toronto and the Rangers don't care about paying out money to injured players they just want the salary cap relief, but teams like CLB that are budget conscious need to pick and choose carefully if they are taking on a LTIR player.
Example - ARI traded for Hossa with a few years left on his deal. The cap hit was somewhere around $7 mil (not certain on this), but the salary for the remaining years was only $1 mil, which made the picks they received worth while.

As for the Jones portion, Connolly is a 29 year old 3rd liner. Not exactly a good return, even for a 1 year rental.
